Hi all,
Is the OS 46 AX better than the FX it replaced?? Just trying to
get opinions.. Have been looking at the AX, But can get NIB FX
and was just wondering... Some at the field think the FX would
be the better choice??

The power is similar, but the FX doesn't use any plastic parts & costs more to make. The FX has a 6-bolt head vs a 4-bolt for the AX. THe FX has a proven track record and the AX is new on the market. My personal choice would be the FX, but ---- ????

Guess I'll go with the FX.. Well unless I can squeeze

i have a fx and ax, the AX is less bulkier than the FX. As for the needle valve, i would rather it be metal that plastic, other than that, they say it has more power and its lighter, which i think it is. not sure about the power though.

I have 2 OS 46AX's They both are great! One has about 2 gal through it, and the other about 1.... Run them rich 2 tanks for break in, and off we go flying... after about 8 tanks lean it out on the low end, and your gravy! the AX46 on a tower muffler and APC 11.5x4 prop hovers my EF Edge profile at 1/2 throttle... And a nice bonus too, I don't take my starter to the field anymore... Starts 2-3 flips with the chicken stick. I'm very happy with the AX so far... Only deadstick was from a fuel line coming lose.
Good luck!

Sorry britbrat but the 46AX has a higher output than the FX ... raideron ... if i were you save a bit more and go for the 50AX ... its worth it. A good alternative would be the MVVS49, can run on low nitro or straight fuel.

tIANci, the AX has a higher ADVERTISED output than the FX. We have done several side-by-side comparisons at our club & there is no meaningfull difference. We have also found that the TT .46 Pro, the EVO .46, & the GMS .47 (with tuned muffler) are equally as powerfull as the AX in real-world testing. Any differences noted are small (100-200 rpm) -- with the AX not always having the small advantage.

The guy at the LHS recommended the AX (despite it being newer and priced less than the FX) because of problems with the cylinder lining on the FX. That's the only time I've heard of anything about that, though. I've only got 5 tanks through my AX, and it's been great so far.

The FX cyl liner peeling problem was real enough, but it was solved long ago. Any of the engines I noted in my pervious post will work beautifully, AX included. However, unlike the FX & others, the AX will be vulnerable to head gasket leaking, back-plate warping & leaking, plus needle-valve assembly breakage -- just like the OS LA series of engines that use the same technology. OS had to cut costs to market a competitive .46 (the FX is/was too expensive) so they "borrowed" the cost reduction methods employed in the LA series.

tIANci, Now why'd you say that:-).. I wanted to get the os50sx.. But with
limited money and being able to get a slight deal on a new 46FX I was
going with the 46... But now that you mentioned it, I'm going through that
process again.. Right now it's just going to replace the LA46 in my Dazzler
not for more speed just to see if it'll hang.. Untill I can get the funds for
my next plane.. which right now is a profile.. 540T
I would guess a ringed engine is better, a little more ponies, almost the same
size... More money... Darn here goes the thinking again..
Anyone know where there's free extra cash one could get:-)

Would any of you be able to point me to a link for a FAQ on starting gas engines? I've got a new trainer and the enginer just doesn't seem to want to start up. It's looking like the gas isn't being pulled up from the tank when I prime it...

Sunwolf.. You may get more replies if you start another thread..
I'm not sure what engine you have, or how your starting it.. stick
or starter.. Some engines take a while to get primed.. My LA-46
will do that.. If you have a starter just keep turning it until you
see the fuel heading to the carb.. Make sure your needle valve
is opened atleast 2&1/2 to 3 turns.. And she should start.. If
your using a stick, That's a little harder.. You could keep your
finger covering the carb and hand turn(holding the prop) until
you see the fuel.. or if you have someone else have them cover
the tail pipe exit(puts all pressure to tank to push fuel to engine)
but as soon as you see fuel going towards carb open the tailpipe
back up.. or you could use you fueler in the pressure tubing to
man. get the fuel to the carb... But remember the last two will
flood the engine real quick, so watch it real good.. And of
course make sure you glow plug is glowing:-)
Hope this helps

I would recommend the tt46 pro. Can't really get a better engine for the money. I have both the os and the tt. they both are good engines, both run well. TT was $20 cheaper.

raideron - good choice ... OS engines are great despite the fact that I have not owned one recently.
brsseb - i got an SC46 for about USD65.00, heheheeee ... its a great little thing, will not be as good as teh IS but still a lot of power and its runs well inverted even. Idles very nicely.

brsseb, Not sure on shipping for you... But check out ebay.. Some great
prices!! Now it's a risk, But if you communicate with the seller before
bidding you reduce your risk... By email and calling!!... If they donot
give you their ph.# forget it.. I was going to get it from a fellow member
here at the club, But he wanted $105, And said he'd do $80 for a used FX
So I'll see. Sat...
tIANci, Thanks.... Now I'm looking at a 50sx... Does this madness ever
stop....

Hello there,
I have a new 46 fx on a tower trainer and had an experienced person put my first tank of fuel through it and he set it up so
it was running well untill my third flight the next day it started cutting out at high throttle but smoothed out moore when i cut back on the
throttle and I managed to get it down but engine stalled just before touch down. I fired it up on the ground and I get like a rattle sound
when throttled up part way than it dies down when you throttle it up. I took out my fuel tank and noticed the fuel tubing was pinched
and i thought this was the problem but after i put a new one in it still does the same thing. I can not find any leaks or any place it
might be sucking air either. I put a new glow plug in when I first ran the engine so i think that should be ok I think but I have
no experince
in setting up engines yet,so maybe someone with more time in this area could give me some suggestions and it would be greatly
appreciated. Thanks a lot
