Just wondering if the Gee Bee style airplanes are good flyers for a second plane. I like the looks of them but don't know much more about them. Are they difficult to fly?

I woulnt get the gee-bee for a 2nd plane. It looks pretty unstable and should fly pretty fast. Look around for reviews on it and youll learn a little more

I watched a special on discovering wings about the full scale Gee Bee. Seems it was a death trap because it was so hard to fly. I would assume the rc plane would be similiar.

On the special some people built one from the original plans years later. The pilot was really good and it flew great.

I agree wings... A guy at our club who has had a couple planes already brought out one of the new Great Planes Gee Bees. He had the club expert who has 40+ years experience in RC flight fly it. Beautiful plane and very nice looking in the air. Slowed down too much it would start to wing rock a bit. The pilot went around a few times trying to get a good feel for the plane before finally touching down. It is one of the neater planes I have seen at the field in a while.

chop-stick, I suggest adding it to your want list but hold off for now. I know some of the Gee Bee model designs brought out in the past have had modifications from the original to make them more stable. Not sure if this includes the Great Planes version.

Very simple answer...

NO!

The reason the GB is so unusual looking is that it was designed to take a BIG engine and wrap the smalles airframe possible around it.

They can be a handful for an experienced flier, a rookie should avoid them.

I actually just started flying a profile gee bee that I bought from a guy at our field b/c my avistar was crashed when I was teaching a friend. The gee bee was defiently a handfull coming off of the avistar but by the 4th or 5th flight I was begining to feel comfortable with it. Now i'm not sure how the regular gee bee's fly but the profile version in my opinion is alot more fun to fly than my avistar.

Look into the GBY from Pacific Aero Models. Big beautiful bird. Lands and flies great, NO bad habits. Do not under power it. Mine has a ZDZ 40. Great reviews in the magazines. An almost perfect ARF.
