Just won a Sig Kougar on Ebay. It needs to be re-covered, and the elevator put back on. I'm sure a few other odds and ends.
Does come with 4 servos. No engine and brand new canopy. Got it for less than $30. I am gonna throw my remaining OS .46 on it.
Anyone have one of these? How does it fly? Wasn't it like a low wing type of trainer? Should I go with trike gear or tail dragger?

"Advanced trainer" From 1975.... I had one and it liked to be flown fast. I powered it with a K&B .45 sprtster, and an old ST .60 rear intake. Glided like an anvil pointed down, but was a decent plane.

Had a Kougar in the late '70's and loved it so much I bought another one about three years ago and fly it often! I have an OS .46 FX on it and I built it light. It has almost unlimited vertical performance. I probably have over 200 flights on it now, in fact I need to replace the light weight wheels because they are so worn. It is very dependable - stable slow or reasonably aerobatic. I don't know how experienced of a flyer you are, but I would recommend it as a great low wing airplane. BTW, it flies like its one rails on approach and landings. Keep it light and make sure the CG is right.

Ken, what is the CG range of the Kougar? I have a Tiger 2 that I fly and it flies pretty darn good. Flew in wind gusts today up to
15 to 20 mph and the wind didn't seem to affect the Tiger all that much.

On the Kougar, Sig recommends a really goofy way to measure the CG, (I think). Here is what the book says."Test fly with the balance point located anywhere between the leading edge at the wingtip and 1/2 " back from the leading edge at the wing tip." "Sport fly at 1/2 " back from the leading edge at the wing tip." "Aerobatics - If your model will spin in both directions at 1/2 " back it need not be moved back any further. Some models need the balance point at 3/4 " for full response."
They go on to say that flying with the CG any further back than 1" is not recommended.
For me, a short guy 5' 10" or so, its tough to get fingertips at each wing tip and try to balance the model. I drew a line from tip to tip and balanced it in a more conventional way.
My Kougar came out nose heavy with the OS 46, so I have about 1 oz of lead under the stab.
Good Luck

I have had a couple of kougars and am still flying one from 15 years ago.I have a supertigre x61 rear exhaust with pipe. It smokes anything on the field and still slows way up for landings. It will climb in a knife edge and tracks great. You'll love this plane.Wind doesn't matter it makes its own. Have fun ,Rick

Gotta agree about the TigerII in the wind. I was flying mine Sunday when the wind blew so hard I put my hat in the truck and put a cap on instead because the hat kept blowing off! I got worked a little on landing, but other than that the Tiger didn't care at all!

you are talking about one of the all time classics here. MANY hours on Kougar(owned three) any 45-46 schnerele mill will work . kougar likes power so dont be shy. it is not a glider & wasnt meant to be. spot on landings are easy . if the plane is old check the center wing joint. brittle epoxy is not a good sign. also BE GENTLE on the control set up. the plane is short coupled and short (but thick ) wings -it doesnt need much. as I recall I balanced about 1/4 inch behind LE at wing tip for starters.

I just got this via Fed-Ex yesterday. Phew....she looks a little ragged!!! Looks like I wll have to make a new rudder.
This plane was orange and black color. Also, will have to re-hinge the ailerons. The fuse looked like it had a long canopy
glued. I will have to take a few pics and post them here. You guys can steer me in the right direction! The wing halves look like they
used some fiberglas and epoxy. Wing feels very strong. I will have to fill in some dents with spackling and sand.

Sorry Dave, been out of town....
I see you got it, so I won't give you obvious info.
I'm pretty sure that this plane was the first sheeted wing I did, and I didn't do the best job on it, though it was super robusto, and took a beatin' and kept on uh, nevermind.

Just got my Tower 2005 catalog the other day. The Kougar is there - page 67. About 82 bucks for the kit, and well worth it, I might add.
Good Luck!!

My Feedback: (3)
Rebuilding is part of the fun. Definitely take before and after pictures. I wish I took "before" pictures. I have recovered a few of my planes just for the heck of it. I picked up an old beat up Ultra Sport .60. Strip it down completely and rebuilt and recovered and flys on rails. Like rebuilding an old car.

I have one that has over 500 flights in my hands and is 16 years old. The airplane was totaled three times before I got it. I totaled it once and knocked the tail off another time. It is one-pound overweight, flies great and lands in any kind of wind. When it is too windy for anyone else to fly the Kougar is in the air. It is an intermediate airplane but with the aileron’s reflexed it will fly very slowly and will stall straight ahead. Generally the airplane is sleek and very fast. During some tests with the radar gun I made two no bounce landings at 41 and 42 mph respectively and did not consider them excessively fast. I have bounced it but it was screaming. It will also land about 22 mph. The foam wing probably cannot be broken. The airplane is not a tail dragger.

the Kougar canopy is actually somewhat short. there is a plastic turtle deck behind it .parts should be availible from sig. you may want to build your own deck from balsa or ply as it is easier to cover with monokote rather than painting the plastic one.
