Avistar or Superstar?

There is no loser -- either one works very well.
The Superstar is somewhat better as a primary trainer, somewhat tougher, and also larger (easier to see in the sky).
The Avistar is acceptably capable as a primary trainer, lighter (works better with a low powered engine) & noticeably more agile.
While the Avistar is fully aerobatic to begin with, the Superstar is reasonably easily modified into a highly capable hot-rod.
Make your choice -- they are both good.

I have flown both (learned on a SuperStar ).
They are both excellent planes. The Avistar is going to land a little faster because of its semi-symetrical wing, on the other hand it is going to handle windy conditions a little better than the SuperStar because of better wind penetration, again due to its semi-symetrical wing.
The SuperStar is going to be a little more stable in the air since it has a bit more dihedrahl (the amount the wing tips are raised ) than the Avistar and the SuperStar is more of a "floater" than the Avistar.
Both planes will do a reasonable amount of aerobatics.
If you go with the SuperStar, set all your control surfaces to minimum. The suggested throws will make the plane very sensitive for many beginers. I don't know if the Avistar has the same sensitivity as the SuperStar.
I don't feel you will go wrong with either one.

Learned on an Avistar, haven`t flown a Superstar but understand they`re a fine trainer. Both are common, well used and, along with the LT-40 and a couple of other trainers, qualify as all time RC " classics" IMHO. The Avistar is indeed more agile than a flat bottomed wing trainer. If you start out with one, I`m sure your instructor will start you out slow and easy, particularly if you have a 46 in it. I still fly my Avistar along with my 4*40 and PT-19.

Well I had the SuperStar back-ordered.
I decided to change the order to the Avistar. I did this because it seems like the Avistar is a somewhat growable plane. Should be receiving it within a week from Towerhobbies!
Can't wait to start cracking on it!

i'm expecting my avistar (first plane) to be delivered tomorrow from tower. i like the fact that its more aerobatic to begin with rather than having to buy 2 planes to do the same things.

There was a guy in our club who soloed...got bored with the Avistar, so he took the diehedral out of the wings, made a tail dragger out of it, put a OS 50 sx on it, and put larger control surfaces on it. It was amazing what stunts he could make that Avistar do! So there is life after solo with the Avistar if you want to bash it some!!

I started on an Avistar about 12 years ago. This last month a beginner brought in an Avistar with a OS .40 la engine on it. The plane will loop, barrel roll, hammerhead, and it'll fly upside down all day long. In about 3 weekends, he's flying by himself, landing and learning aerobatics. Someone else brought out a Superstar, and yes it's bigger and more stable, but not by much. I think you'll grow out of the superstar much quicker than the avistar. As for the durability, I can say that both are really strong. The first time my beginner was setting up for a landing, he hit a pine tree about 50 ft up in the air.....he took a chunk out of the wing, but the fuse was in great shape, no damage. The next weekend, he had the wing repaired and the plane flies like nothing ever happened.
Honestly, I dont think I've ever seen someone learn so quickly. This guy is in his early 30's and sooo adicted to R/C...it's fun to watch

I have the superstar and have nothing to say bad about it. It is a great plane (thought i havent flown it i will let you know how it does on the ground) It taxis very well long as you dont get out of control. I would advise an electro start for one but, a chickenstick.hand works fine. I ran it into a curb today at full throttle and it started up again no problem and nothing ot hurt (no spinner on it) so yeah i like it alot so far. I cant wait to get it in the air

My little brother learned to fly on G2. He soloed on his second flight on my Avistar. So, if you have a simulator I would say to go with the Avistar. The only problems he had was getting used to tracking the model plane rather than staring into the center of the computer screen. After about 20 flights on the Avistar, he soloed on my ModelTech .25 size Me-109 with a 40 on it.

I would say Avistar 51%, SuperStar 49%. I have a Avistar and it flies really good. As for the Super Star, one of our newest members has one and it flies really well, just it had more diedral and a flat bottom wing (as others mentioned). Both are also very durable. I stalled my Avistar and the rubber bands snapped through the wing and made a big hole but it was easy to repair. I have pics of that if you want me to show them.

I solo'ed with the NexSTAR. Advantage: RTF (it took me about 4 minutes to put together). Additional advantages, some may call them useless gizmo's, are the wing tip spoilers and air brakes, as well as the AFS (Automatic Flight Stabalizer). I never used the AFS on mine but did use the wing tip spoilers and airbrakes. Seemed to help a lot. But best of all, it came with a CD with the RealFlight Simulator with the NexSTAR. I used it often and it did in fact help with my solo because I was up and flying more quickly than if I did not have the simulator. A good friend of mine, Carl, had t he same rig, he solo'ed on his second flight. He based this on the simulator time he spent.
Good luck. Any of the aircraft you chose will work just fine as long as you buddy up with a good instructor. Make darned sure he has you practice "emergency procedures", Dead Stick for instance. Paid off in spaded for me!!

i'm training on a superstar 40. really easy assembly, nice looking and well built plane, and you won't get any complaints from me about how it flies. It's easy to fly, and it'll cut up pretty nice (i think so, anyways). I'm not moving up from it for a long long time
at least not until i can fly it in my sleep!
Only complaint i have is it takes some effort to pull off an aileron roll. I still havent gotten it to pull one off that looks good yet..But the nice part is the plane recovers almost instantly..

You cannot go wrong with either one! I have over 100 flights on my SS and she is still a great plane. I have seen many Avistars and not one person complained about them. They fly very well!!!
