the paper and most of the presentation are gunna be on the dynamics of air planes themselves. etc how they create lift, what flaps do what, and probly a journal of the progress.
Another presentation you could do would be about the drive system itself. How different pitch props give you a certain performance. Also what gear ratios work better with what props. If you use your batteries as your control (eg. you stick with say NiMH 7.4v 750mah packs) you can time the difference between flight times. The paper can be about when you go from X sized prop the plane goes Y fast for Z long. List the happy medium of speed vs duration. Why a higher or lower pitch will give you the performance, etc etc.

Just make sure to check out GWS's suggestions on prop sizes on the gear boxes... You don't want to over do things and burn up the motor, although they are cheap.

http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXHCL0&P=7 would this be to much to handle?

i really want something that can hit 20. since its electric i can tone the throttle down and fly it towards its minimum speed for a while right?

How does the speed of the model effect your report presentation? A lot of experienced people have tried to provide you with a plan that will allow you to accomplish your stated goal(s) of being able to perform a flying R/C model demonstration in less then 2 months. Why is it that you continue to look for models that can and will make accomplishing that goal harder and possibly more dangerous.

BTW Did you ask your teacher IF it you would even be allowed to perform this demonstration on school grounds?

Compared to the Slow Stick, it will be more complicated, take longer to assemble, has more parts to break, and when you are explaining how the controls work, the servos are hidden inside so nobody can see how they work. You've got a deadline and several people have endorsed the Slow Stick as a good choice. You will be able to get a faster plane later. Perhaps it's time to make a decision?

the teacher actually reccomended the idea.
i was running low on things and she knows im into engineering and physics etc.

i look at 4mph and i just dont see anything special.... up down side to side at a slooooow speed for a big'ish plane.
plus i like challenges . i want to be able to impress myself at the end too

edit: by tonight i hope to have everything ordered

If I were you I'd be impressed with myself if you can build it write up your report on it and learn to fly it well enough to make it go up down and side to side in a controlled manner in the time you have stated that you have left. Any way good luck the clock is ticking

So your going with the beaver? Yea, it'll go upside down, just before it smashes into the gound. [X(]

I thought you wanted to build something. That is a foam egg carton jobbie.

Is it just me, or is this thread becoming a collosal waste of time for all of those experienced members who have given good advice?

Even a slow stick will take all of the remaining time you have to learn. Better get started.

Good Luck!!

Might i ask, where is Westfeild? I know of several clubs in NJ, so if you are in the neighborhood, you could get some help.

The only trainer I know of that might go near that speed is http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...=LXJKU3**&P=ML but it is probably too big to fly out of a football feild (atleast the glow version is)

Its electric, 4 chan, and would be an ok starting bird, but LISTEN CLOSE. Its not something you can go fly yourself right out of the box. You will have to have someone train you. You need to find someone that can hook you up with a buddy box and work with you. You will be able to take it and show it to the class, but DO NOT fly it in front of them. You stand a high chance of crashing it into people and hurting someone. Don't take the risk.

Your wasting your time with the egg carton flyers. Just my personal opinion, but they fly slow, go up and down a tiny bit, and will not do anything like a loop or a roll. My tiger moth would, but the wings flexed a ton and almost broke, but I built things into the wings to keep them together.

If you are going to do it, do it right and do it safe.

the wings on the GWS planes are the same as egg cartons. They are thin foam and the plane will not do much, but fly striaght and that is probably more of what you should be getting, but it isn't what you want, and I think it will be a waste of money for you in the long run. Just my 2 cents

Leave the poor kid alone and let him get the GWS stick, at leasts he can get it in the air..once you get the radio gear and complete your assignment, then you can put that equipment (servos, battery, esc,) you in any other plane you want there are lots of parkflyers that are less than $50 .....this part is just for my own fun..dont waste your time and money on a .40 glow trainer that you'll be bored with in no time

balsa - i like the spads idea for a senior project as well... it's got all the right elements, build from scratch, durable and definitely faster than 15-20. but it's dangerous, too.

if you are settled on an ARF, i suggest the multiplex easy star as the best bet for numerous reasons

1. it's safe since it's foam and the propeller is in the rear out of harms way
2. it's big and easy to see in the air and glides well
3. it's so darn easy to fly. if you've driven an RC car, i can almost guarantee that you can fly the plane given a huge huge huge field and the first flight with someone with experience
4. the RTF takes 30 minutes to put together with 20 of it making sure the stickers are in the right place. and since you do absolutely nothing that determines the performance of the plane, there's absolutely nothing to screw up!
5. it comes RTF or ARF depending on you
6. it's fairly durable and easy to repair
7. you can modify it

i would recommend the following:
easy star kit $60
20amp esc - $25-$30
futaba 4YF with 4 Servos - $120
batteries 8-Cell 9.6V 4/5SC 2000mAh NiMH - $25 (2) - $50
half decent peak charger - $30

grand total - $285

sounds like a lot compared to the $175 RTF price but it's well worth it.

after making it, you fly it with the three channel set up first then you can modify it with larger elevator and larger rudders. then you can cut out ailerons and install an additional servo in for full 3 axis control

another one i'd look at is the sky scooter, which is a little more challenging but faster and more acrobatic.

yes the slow stick is nice, too... but i'd for the SPAD for a challenge and the Easy Star for a lot more fun.
