Default Help with a reversed engine

Hi! i bought the eagle 400. The speed controller that i am using is the pixie 20. When eer i advance the throtle, it is blowing the air forward. I have swithched the prop, and it does the same thing. I am using deans to conect the esc to the engine. the polarities are correnct, but i was thinking that maybe I have the male on the wrong side?????

thank you!

As you have learned, reversing the prop does not reverse the direction of the thrust. I'm not sure what type of electric motor that you have. there are two technologies. A DC brushed motor has two wires connecting the speed control to the motor. To reverse the direction of rotation on this type of motor, you must switch the two wires. The other (more expensive) type of electric motor is an AC brushless motor. these motors can be identified by THREE wires running between the speed controller and the motor. to reverse the direction you swap any two of the wires.
Make sure your prop rotates such that the leading edge of the prop goes first. typically, this means the numbers on the prop (such as "6x5") face forward.

So you don't think that the male/female order of deans matter. I am using a brushed 400 speed. If i change the wires CONECTING TO THE MOTER-i will have a good engine?

thanks!

Yes, on a DC brushed motor, the two wires may be colored black and red, but you can safely swap them. the designer of the motor does not necessarily know which way you want to turn the motor. For example, if you use this same motor on the front of an airplane (traditional "tractor" configuration) you want it to turn one way. if you use this motor on a pusher plane (such as a zagi flying wing or stryker, etc, the same motor/prop combination will have to have the wires reversed.

this engine came with the plane. IT is not a pusher. Do you think that the position of the male an d female deans wuould make a difference?thanks!

if i understand correctly, you are asking if the female deans needs to be attached to the SC and the male to the motor. or vice versa. if i understand your question, then the answer is that it does not matter. I am pretty good at soldering, so i always solder the motor wires directly to the speed controller. I use a deans between the battery pack and the speed controller. Sounds like you have a deans connector between the motor and speed controller. this can be advantageous if you use the same SC with different planes. I'm not aware of any universal standard, so do it wither way, just be consistent if you have multiple planes and you can swap parts between them.

Thanks. the reason that i am using a deans is becuase i want to use the sc on other planes, bucase i am 13, and i have no money!

anyway, i am going to change the wires. Thank yoiu!

oh. my flight instructor/friend says that all i have to do is change the wire on the dean mening:

If the red wire was on the left, put it on the right, and same switch with black. Right!

i am thinking that just changing the wiring ON THE ONE DEAN< coming from the engine is going to shomethink out.

VIsualize this. IT is what he wants me to do.

You see the 400 speed engine, with 2 wires coming out. At the end is the deans. The deans is attached to another deans, going to the sc. Now, i take the deans that is conected to the ENGINE, and switch the wires, so if red is on the left, it is now on the right. I do nothing to the deans on the ESC.

Will this work, or will my $40 esc short out?

thanks you!

Zach-

Just heat up the wires at the connection to the motor, switch them around to the opposite connection and re-solder them. I'm not fully understanding the other things you proposed, but that will work just fine. I had the same problem on my Slow Stick. The connectors on the motor are color-coded opposite my speed control. Just switch them. The motor doesn't care which way it is running.

For future reference. The best thing to do is to put the female connector on the power source. This would be the battery itself or the output of the ESC. The reason for this is in case the connector bumps across something metalic (conductive) it will not cause a short circuit. No power will flow until the male pins are inserted.

If your motor has a Schottky diode wired to it, you'll have to reverse its polarity when you reverse the speed control/motor connection. The current will be running opposite to the way it was originally wired, and it will burn out rather quickly.

i understand that one way is to switch the wires on the motor. But someone told me to do it a differnent way. I will try to explane it.

Visialize the 2 wires coming from the engine. At the end is a male deans clip. When i fly the plane, i plug the male plug at the end of the engine into the female plug on the esc.

Now. Instead of messing with the wires GOING INTO THE ENGINE, all i have to do is switch the wires on the DEANS!!! AND ONLY THE DEANS FROM THE ENGINE. If i do that , and nothing else, will it work?

also, see post #10.

i hope this helps!

Yes. Switch the wires on the Deans and it will work. Nobody understands you, but I do.

If you actually got a motor to run backwards through an ESC you are one lucky 13 year old cause it only takes about 3 seconds to burn one up that way,,been there done that....Rog
