Hey guys,

I've got an aweful lot of flight on y Ultra Stick Lite now and recently had to replace the rudder hinges! Can I pin them by drilling through the wood and hinge and inserting a toothpick with Woodglue or Epoxy? I could also use CA but I don't much care for it and the longer set-up times of the others are beneficial..

I've been doing what you described for almost 25 years and it has never let me down. However, I never saw the need to glue the toothpicks in since the surface is going to be covered. This makes life a lot easier if I ever needed to remove that surface.

The hole I drill for the toothpicks is relatively small so the toothpick really needs to be pushed in there. Also, if in doubt, you can always use two toothpicks per side (4 for each hinge).

Why pin them?? It looks terrible!
I have never in my 30 years in this sport/hobby lost a flyÃ*ng surface due to a hinge failing in the air. I either use 5min epoxy for ordinary hinges or for my mylar hinges... Flash thin CA glue + kicker. This is on all kinds of models, large aerobatic birds to 375km/h F3D pylonracers.

I don't know why he said that they look terrible? If done properly they can't be seen. Drill a hole, insert a toothpick or small dowel, cut off and sand smooth. If you feel you want to pin your hinges there is nothing wrong with doing that at all

Pinning Tips, don't use CA for pinning. If you slow down while inserting the ttohpick, the glue will suddenly set wheather it is in far enough or not! Wood glue works the best for this. Use the round tooth picks and cut them in half. Drill a small hole through the hinge. Add wood glue to the tooth pick and insert it with the pointy end until the middle of the toothpick that you just cut is level with the outside of the control surface. Now when the glue drys you only have one side to sand level instead of 2 sides! BTW unless you are using the giant scale hinges, I find that 1 pin for each side of the hinge is adequte.[8D]

You ought to fly the old clunker I have, then. Vibrates like an old Harley, you have to check every linkage, hinge, wheel collar and bolt at least every other flight, or something will surely fall off. I had to land the other day, the plane was acting squirrely. The hinges on the rudder had vibrated apart at the pin (Robart Hinge points, the large ones) and the only thing holding the rudder on was the top hinge and the linkage to the tailwheel, and the control rod. I had only replaced the hinges five flights previous to the failure. I wound up doubling the number of hinges (four to eight) and rubber mounted the engine (US-41). So far so good, but I've only flown the plane four times since then.

I used the large Sig flat hinges on the ailerons, didn't glue them, but used two pins per side, they're doing fine.
