I'm new to the gas engine world. Very new. I had the Nexstar...and had a tragic accident involving the receiver battery dying mid flight. So anyway, I now have the parts to a Nexstar, and have put them all into another plane. Most of this is insignificant, I guess.
The real question is that when the engine is running, there seems to be a lot of goo coming out of the muffler. I say "a lot" because I have never seen ANY gas airplane engine run before...and have no plane engine to compare it to. I own a weed-wacker, and it doesn't do this. Should there be any fluid coming out of the muffler? It's sort of a consistant 'spattering'. Enough where the plane needs to be wiped down after use.
Is this normal?
Thanks!

Your "weed wacker" is a gasoline driven engine--it will put out some oily exhaust, as it's oil is mixed with the gas that it burns. However, most of the oil is burned with the gas, so the exhaust is mostly smoke.
Your airplane engine runs off of GLOW FUEL--not gasoline. Two different animals. The glow fuel has castor or some synthetic oil in it that doesn't burn very readily. This keeps the engine oiled and keeps it from burning itself up. However, this oil will be driven out (mostly unburned) with the exhaust, and create a gooey mess all over your plane. There is a reason they are called "slimers." Just get some good grease cleaner and clean the plane up at the end of the day!

Lesath,
What you are seeing is completely normal. On the engines we use has a lubricant in the fuel (either castor oil or a synthetic lubricant) and this lubricant does not burn in the combustion process. This is what you are seeing coming out of your engine. While still 2-stroke engines our motors differ from a "weed wacker" in the fact that on the weed wacker engine the oil usually burns off in the combustion process.
Just wipe your plane off when you are done flying. Everything is normal.
Hope this helps

When your engine stops throwing oil is the time to worry. a friend and I won't mention the fuel he used as he was sponsored by it use to brag about how little slime was on his plane after a day of practice! Ya huh can you say one burned out YS 1.20?
