Default AMA # on wing what to use?

What do you use to put numbers on the plane. Do you goto staples and buy stickers or something else?

Some hobby shops sell number decals. Tower Hobbies for example sells them for $3 for 1" decals all the way up to $7 for 3" decals. If you go to one of your local arts and crafts stores you can usually find the individual numbers. Usually you can get the numbers you need for a few cents.

Self-stick decals will not be fuel proof. I'd cut out numbers from iron-on covering and use that.

Go to any sign shop in your area and have them cut vinyl numbers. They're easy to apply and fuel proof. I get 1 1/2" block numbers for about $5.00 per set (two complete numbers sets).

Vinyl cut graphics are not fuel proof. They are fuel resistant. But if you don't seal them they will eventually get fuel and exhaust residue underneath them and that will cause the graphics to lift off or slide out of place. They need to be sealed once they are in place. Rustoleum Clear enamel or LusterKote Clear are fuelproof. These are good, but I actually prefer clear nail polish to seal the graphics.

Ken.. Okay, agreed on the "fuel proof". But, vinyl will stand up to a lot. A lot more than the peal and stick printed stuff. I completely covered my Yak with vinyl. It had more than 150 flights on it before it met it's demise and not one edge came up. Avery A-8 vinyl has more stickem and is lighter than the 3M stuff (my thoughts). I've cleaned it with acetone and alcohol and never once had the color streak. Anyway, tvhelidad was asking about numbers on the wing. I think the vinyl on the wing where it rarely gets fuel soaked would work the best.

John,
I own a vinyl cutting business. The stuff that you get from Avery is very overpriced, and it's a bit thicker than I prefer to use.

I try to tell people that they need to seal the graphics because they will lift eventually, especially if you use glow engines.

I generally cut my numbers and letters out of black tissue. I put a couple of coats of thin dope on the silk and then stick the letters and numbers down with thinner, and continue doping over them until the wing is nice and shiny.

tvhelidad,
The only stupid question is the one that's not asked. Please feel free to ask ANY questions you may have. That's what this forum is here for.

We have a local sign shop that cuts out numbers (letters) per our specifications and charges per the number and letter depending on the height. These are plastic with stick on backs that work out just great. You can get your entire AMA number , such as AMA 123456 all in one stick on decal that will not come off.

Good ol' Wally-world has sets of Vinyl letters & numbers in different sizes. I used the 1" on the ailerons of a 40 size plane & they've worked very well so far. You could seal them as Ken advised & they only cost a couple of bucks. I've actually done a couple planes from one set.

In that case...

Why would you put your AMA number on your wing at all? Is that a rule that some clubs have? I have my name, cellphone number, and AMA number inside my fuselage, but that's it.

If you're flying Pattern, section 4.7 of the NSRCA rules dictate: All models shall be identified by the contestant's AMA license number permanently affixed to the upper side of the right-hand lifting surface or to each side of the fuselage or the vertical stabilizer. The height of the numerals shall be at least one (1) inch.

I put the number on my plane because I want to put it there. It's part of the graphics that I use on my plane. I also have my name and contact number on a piece of paper inside of the fuselage, as per the AMA safety code.

I put the Channel # of the Receiver that is in the airplane on both sides of the model's Vertical Stab. All the guys in my group know what these numbers refer to and it saves them the trouble of yelling at me all the time asking "What channel you on?!" Then too if some visitor should ask what the number means, I can tell him, or her, "that is the number of that particular airplane of mine."
So if the number "49" they go away mumbling "man, he has 40 of those damned things..."
