Default Which trainer?

I really like the looks of the Kaos 40 ARF. It comes with the 0.S. .46 AX ABL with muffler. Is this a good trainer? The price for both of them are $204. How much total am i going to need to get flying?

I am a beginner, again.lol When i was 13-14(5-6 years ago) I had an electric plane and a nitro trainer plane, and i was pretty good at it. I flew probably every other week for an entire year. My dad bought me a traxxas nitro sport and sold the plane. He said it was too expensive. I want to get into it again. Any other good/affordable combos that you guys reccomend? Thanks for the help. I love the SITE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No the Kaos is not a trainer. It is a "go where you point it" airplane and doesn't have the self righting tendencies a good trainer should have. Here's an example of what you'd be looking for. http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXFG19&P=0
That would be my preference, but any plane like that would do. Comes down to which one you like for the price. You do have a nice engine picked out. Go with that and stick it in your second, more aerobatic airplane and you'll have a blast! Good luck.

Wow. Great tips guys. That was really fast. Thanks alot.

Addressing a question in my original post: How much more $$$$$$$$ is required besides plane and engine? I know radio and field equipt, but how much does all that cost all together.

Hi ZWJATO...

You can spend as little or as much as you want on radios and field equipment (there is a huge selection out there). A good 4 channel radio with 4 servos, TX/RX batteries and charger will run from around $125.00 and up. for field equipment you can start out pretty cheap ( hand crank fuel pump, glow igniter, glow plug wrench and a chicken stick ) this is enough to fuel and start the airplane for around $30.00 to $40.00. If you want more accessories you can add a field box, glow panel, electric fuel pump, 12 volt battery, electric starter.... as I said you can spend as much as you want. Click on the Tower Hobbies icon near the top of this page and you can find a huge selection of radios, field equipment, engines and airplanes.
If you have a flying club nearby I am sure they could help you get started and give you some more advice on getting into the sport.

Please take a look at the Seagull Boomerang 40 as your first trainer aircraft (assuming it's available locally).

See the reviews on rcuniverse, I just added my review so I won't repeat it all here.

Sturdy plane, easy to assemble, very forgiving to beginners, very fun to throw around once you've progressed past the solo stage.

You can expect that it will cost you about $500 to get started with a decent little setup. You might be able to get away for a little cheaper if you can get some used things through your local club members. Most of us have so much junk that we give an item here and there to help out the new guys.

Bare minimums

Airplane of your choice of ARF, RTF or kit and whatever it takes to finish it.
Engine (.46AX is an AWESOME engine.
4 Channel Transmitter minimum (most come with 4 servos, transmitter, tx batteries and receiver batteries and a receiver included)
Servos (4)
4 channel Receiver
1 gallon of Fuel 10% or 15%
fuel tubing
some sort of glow plug wrench
couple of glow plugs
glow lighter (heater, whatever)
chicken stick
something to carry your stuff in
AMA membership ( highly recommended)
Instructor (free at your local club and also highly recommended)

Since you used to fly before you could also check out the Hobbico Avistar. Its more of an advanced trainer but with a decent instructor and your previous experience it should work well for you. The plane itself is a sturdy design good for training and the the plane is more aerobatic than a standard flat bottom wing trainer once you have your thumbs back.

Of course , you dont have to buy it all at once($500-$600) Many of the new fliers in the area Im in, have built up thier gear as they built thier trainer. They let thier disposable income determine how fast they go. Which I guarantee is better than sitting in the dark, trying to read the owners manual on a 14MZ!

Seeing that you have flown and were fair at it you may want to look at the MIDWEST AEROBAT. It can be assembled as a taildragger or trike and can be very gentle or very aerobatic, it's a FUN airplane and VERY easy to assemble. Check it out at www.falcon-trading.com and also see a complete review at www.masportaviator.com (menu on left - flight line kit reviews )
Also I agree with some of the above when they suggest you join a club and get some assistance, especially some time on a buddy box, it will be worth it's weight in GOLD. ENJOY !!! RED

If budget is an issue, & it sounds like it might be, then take a look at the classified here on RCU. There is usually some Trainers for sale as guys progress on to hotter planes. There is also usually some garage sell adds where you might find a field box with most of the goodies you'll need. Someone's allways retiring the hobby for one reason or another anyway it's worth taking a look. You can refine your search to go straight to the Trainers, unless you wanna drool all over the nice stuff too Good luck.

I just went & took a quick look for ya in the RCU classifieds. There are about a dozen Trainers for sale in there right now, some looked like a pretty good deal. One guy in Fl has 3 brand new in the box RTF's 1) Avistar 2) NexStar 3) Alpha 60 all nice planes ready to go. There are some used ones in there too, take a look.

used setups can be ways to shave $$off for other things.
