RE: WOW! Another Sig Somethin Extra Build
I just wanted to give a flight report on mine. We had a beautiful day for Nebraska standards yesterday (55 with 10mph cross winds) so I took the afternoon off & got about 6 flights in on my SSE. All I can say is that this baby is far more aerobatic than I ever imagined.
The roll rate is so incredible that I spent most of my flights just rolling & rolling & rolling.
Some guys I work with came out for a bit so I was able to get some video to share with everyone (2nd flight since maiden). I was still feeling her out on the flight, so there aren't any extreme aerobatics. (OK, maybe I just can't do any extreme aerobatics)
On the later flights I was doing a lot of blindingly fast inside & outside snap rolls & very crisp hammer head turns. I practiced a blender several times but I could never get it to flat spin on the bottom. (I'll keep working on that one)
Inverted flight does require a touch of down elevator, but I'm sure that's a CG thing. I had to push the battery all the way forward under the fuel tank & add 3 oz. to the nose to get the CG at 3 1/2" per the manual.

See... now if I had mine done I could have been out flying today! Trace wind with 70 Degree temps! BAH!
Congrats on the great flying Tuwood.
And so the process begins again:
I'm starting to create the laminated sidewalls of the fuse. I thought about the servo tray and I decided to put on a couple of pieces of spruce 1/4 x 1/4 to help the servo screws have something to sink into, and thus I pulled out some wood from the heart of the tray to make up for it.

So I have the fuse walls in, servo tray in place and am glueing the sides of the fuse together now... I think this is where I screwed up last time and thus because of it I have triple checked my alignment and placed weight to ensure I get a nice straight fuse connection with this step and the rest of the steps after this one.

Jeez, Rich; that looks like a jigged 747 fuselage! No way THAT puppy is going to be warped.

Goes to show that I learned something I took the clamps and weights off it this morning and there is a slight twist in it, but after talking to a friend he said that it's normal and to use my weights to ensure it's straight when I glue the rear half together and that will help lock it into the right shape. I put just a little weight on it this morning and measured with right angles and rullers and sure enough with little help it was in the right shape. WOO HOO!

Heh. Well... after scrutinizing the fuse with my friend, it seems last time when I got to this point I didn't take my time and just kept going without referencing the natural warp of wood, etc. When I started installing the rear fuse walls and then the bottom, I inadvertently locked the twist into the shape. The fix is to be aware of it and not lock it in :-).

I ran into the same thing on one of my wings. it was twisted a bit & I saw it so I just weighted & pinned it down until it was sheeted. then it was locked in straight!
btw, loved your glue post in the other SSE thread. I'm still laughing!

So I'm going to stop off at the craft store today and get some posterboard and start drawing the graphic templates... I'll post that also as I move forward.

I think I've become a touch over-anal on my fuse build.... None the less... going by each bulkhead through the fuse and ensuring a correct and straight alignment.

RE: WOW! Another Sig Somethin Extra Build
I'm just about caught up to where I had my mess-up. Fuse top is glueing in and will bring me back to where I left off.... except this time I wont have a twist in the fuse. I should be breaking new groud soon and will start back up with the more intense picture diary once I get into it.

Keep up the photos... It's teasing me into starting my own SSE... it'll be my 3rd....
I think that the only mod that I'll make to it is to widen the rudder by 3/4" or 1".

Our new build has been delayed by a bad report card... my grandson picked his grades up, and his mother said he can now start on his Xmas present.
I think we're going to do this one bone stock. I was going to put a 52 Surpass in there, but the kid wants speed. I found a like-new OS .46SF, so I won't need to move the firewall back.
As soon as I can finish installing this BME 50 gas engine in my Extra, we'll clear the bench and start building.

RE: WOW! Another Sig Somethin Extra Build
I plan a OS52fs in my new SSE build and have no intentions of moving the firewall anywhere.
I currently fly my first SSE with OS70fs and it also have the firewall where's it supposed to be.
What's the point of moving the firewall from the prefabricated slots?
ps. My SSE + OS70 flies extremely good so it can't be any major flaw in having the engine where it is.

If you didn't have to do some serious weight shifting (battery behind the servos, etc.) with that 70 Surpass mounted "normally", your model was rather tail heavy prior to engine installation.
It is not a "major flaw"; simply cosmetic and minor aerodynamic consideratrions.

RE: WOW! Another Sig Somethin Extra Build
OK, now I see what you mean.
Yes the prop is protruding a bit from the side cheeks.
I put an 1500mah ni-cad under the servo tray, the model is front heavy and maybe not perfect for those extreme manouvers but it flies great.
Anyhow, I plan to make my second SSE the same way with the OS52fs and keep the firewall in it's stock location (matter of fact, I already glued it )
For me the looks isn't to disturbing and it flies good enough for me.
Here's a pick of my SSE #1 with .70fs

RE: WOW! Another Sig Somethin Extra Build
Things are moving right along. This update shows the following:
- installed all control paths
- installed fuel tank and foam rubber
- removed right front cheek for access to install throttle line.
- drilled out mounting holes on the du-bro landing gear.
- Cut out mounting hole for charging jack and on/off switch.
- Cutout wheel wells and tapes the wheel cowling halves together. Does anyone have any recommendations on the best way to glue these together?
Also have the trim scheme done to scale on posterboard for the wings and vert stab.

It looks like you cut the switch hole under the tank & I don't think my version of the switch/charge jack would fit in there, but yours may.
Looking good though. You'll be covering in no time!!

I route the battery cable and one extension cable from the reciver out from the plane.
This feel safer than using a switch and it's easy to connect/disconnect.
