id thought id seen it all, but we had a newbie at the field today an he seemed a lil shy at first, so i asked him about his plane, he had a eflight edge 540, told me it was his 1st r/c plane. I told him ar eyou sur eyou dotn want me to maden it for you it would be a shame to watch it crash. After he told me no he would fly it himself i was like ok fine but your gonna crash. Dont ask me how but this man flew that damm thing with no problems at around half throttle on low throws AMAZING!!

No kidding? did he tell you he was new to this hobby? and never had it in the air before? You know what I mean mabyyes? maby no?
mind you sometime it make you wonder, you could not learn the TX the first time unless you have a Sim.

Maybe he had few years simulator time?

Smells like a simulator ace to me. I had G3 for a year before I flew the real thing. My instructor couldn't believe it either. Soloed the same day.

I've seen a few newbies have a good first flight or two. With simulators it does make the task much easier and I highly recommend them. The down side is the confidence gained in the beginning giving a sence of knowing more than what is actual. When moving on to more powerful and maneuverable planes many do a lot of crashing. We all hear about the winderful first few flights and normally not the disaster that happened just a few flights later.

Yup EXCAP, you're right. After I managed to go solo my NexStar on my own after a couple days practicing with the sim, I got pretty excited and wondered if I couldn't manage to fly my little E-Flite Edge 540 as well. So I took it out & flew it a few times, each flite ending with a bad & or ugly at the least landing. Not any damaging landings but either hard or nose-overs. Flite # 5 was really fun! I got it to hover for a few minutes followed by a real pretty knife edge-horizontal pull-out. I flew it around a few more laps around the pattern & brought her down for a landing approach when the dumb-thumbs kicked in. I planted her like a lawn dart![:@] I thought I had just broken the prop & was very happy with my flites all in all. I got home & opened her up to find I broke just a little bit more than the prop! Luckily I was able to repair all the cracks & broken wood with CA & she is now ready for her next round of abuse. The point is I know I still need ALOT more time on my Trainers (have two) before I'm ready to move on to my real low-wing planes. Getting away with flying the little brushless Edge is one thing, my glow-powered Cap, Tequila Sunrise & Dragon Lady will be quite another thing I am sure. I won't even attempt these planes until I can do any & everything possible with my Trainers without having to really think about it.
You never know though, your boy might just be one of them Naturals, or part of the Nintendo generation. I really think these kids coming up today that have had a joystick or gamepad in there hands ever since they could pick one up really have a step up on us old farts!
Happy New Year!![sm=sunsmiley.gif]

That's just it! I could say I learned 60 percent with the sim, the rest with the instructor, the problem is the lack of experience and in real time of field and wind conditions, that's when the bobos happen, you can fly better in the sim than real time, so keeping that in mind when flying, will lessen crashes. At my club, one guy wit plenty of simulator time got is wing after 3 flight.
After he flew by himself. But the simulator do not teach you to recharge your battery,
so he crash is plane badly because low battery voltage. [&o]

Well, I hope it all goes well for him. I will try not to be negative about it as I am glad for the guy. Sims are great. But they are not truly 3D expressions of the real world. They cannot simulate everything. That includes all sorts of variables that real RC Pilots deal with every day including brain farts and just bad days in general. Once I actually had a jogger come and stand right out in the middle of the runway as I was on approach during a deadstick landing. I screamed at him to move but he was hypnotized by the incoming plane. I leveled out and nosed up to slow descent to give him more time to move but he just stood there. For the betterment of humanity I rolled it into the ground to prevent hitting him. He shrugged and turned and went on his way like nothing ever happened. I still wish I had kicked his butt but I didn't. I could have... but see if you sim replicates that. I also had a plane of mine wasted on the ground one time. There was a bunch of us flying that day. Some idiot punk flying a 60 size mustang landed his bird in a tailwind, out of the pattern no doubt. Everyone was pissed. His craft hit the ground and he just let it settle in at idle. He lost site of it as it came my way directly for me and my son. It was still hauling balls. I jumped up and grabbed my son as it left the runway and came directly for us. As I snatched up my son and wheeled around it cut my Super Sporster 40 in half right behind the wing. We were in the pits. He had no sight of the plane yet did not shut it down. He landed out of pattern at dangerous speeds in a tailwind endangering many people. He put his plane before people and property...something I will not do. I wanted to stomp his plane with both feet but I didn't. He told me he would buy my plane but I was mad and told him to just get away from me. I said man just get your plane and get away from me and my kid. I put my son in the car then I went back and gathered up my gear and busted up plane. I seen the same guy later hit an old lady sitting on a lawn chair with the very same airplane. I was ready to kill him then but I didn't. Anyway, sims don't SIM everything. Anyway, I am glad the new guy was succesfull. Maybe he will make a great addition to the hobby.

Don't you think that playing games like Police Quest, Space Quest and Quest for Glory (For the old SIARRA games fan
) actually makes you smarter for stimulating your brain?? You had to solve problems in those games. I think most video games stimulates the brain in a positive way. They inhance relexes and requires you to use logic. Your bain is reactive when playing games, not passive as when watching your favorite episode of "Friends" or maybe the "X-files" if you are the geeky type like me
But this hobby is also great... you learn a lot of stuff with this hobby, physics, how engines work some basic engineering... how a plane works, electric stuff...batterie technology...
Amazing hobby... it is...
Cheers and happy new year!!!
