Default couple of questions

Hi, I am new to RC airplanes and am almost done with my first airplanes except i have a couple of questions.

1) Do i drill holes in the engine mount so that i can put bolts through the holes on the side of the engine and through the engine mount???

2) Does anyone here have a step by step description of pictures of installing a spinner / cone on an engine???

As for mounting the engine, I prefer to drill and tap my holes either 4/40 or 6/32 depending on the size of the engine. As for spinners, all of them come with mounting instruction's. Most of them have bushings that need to be installed, according to your shaft size. The spinner back plate goes up against the thrust plate on the engine followed by the prop, followed by the prop washer, follwed by the prop nut. Then the spinner is installed and all the screws or bolts are then tightned to hold the spinner on the back plate. Good Luck, Dave

Joshua,
Sorry that I missed you this week. I'm down here in San Benito right now, but I'm flying back home tomorrow afternoon. I was going to PM you while I was down here, but it's been a pretty hectic week for me and I really didn't have much time other than work. Oh well, maybe next trip.

Anyway, on to your question. About the motor. Take a look at my LT-40 build thread. So you don't have to wade through the whole thread here's the link to where I deal with drilling the motor mounts and mounting the motor:
[link]http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_3439708/mpage_9/key_/tm.htm#3548492[/link]
If you look a few posts further down the thread I do some work on the spinner, but only for mounting the backplate.

As for the spinner, take a look at the attached diagram. It should give you a pretty good idea of how to assemble and mount the spinner. While it's not for an exact make of spinner, they are all pretty much similar so you should be able to figure out what you need. If you still have any specific questions about this please feel free to ask and we'll do what we can to get you squared away.

Hope this helps

Ken

If it's a composite engine mount, you can also use #4 or #6 sheet metal screws. Drill the appropriate tap hole, lube the screw with a little grease (NOT petroleum based) and use a lock washer under the screw head. Dave Brown uses this method on his engine mounts, and it works great!

I drill straight thru the mount and mount the engine with a 4mm bolt and lock nut.

Lock nut works (but is not necessary) unless the bottom of the mount rail isn't parallel to the top, like the Dave Brown types.
