Why is ca so messy? (nobody told me they made tips)
And how do you get your fingers Unstuck? (lol)
Isn't Dope illegal? (someone might ask)
Someone asked the ? "what do you need?" We also need to know what is necessary and what just makes life easer.
thanks and I'll have more

Love the question about "dope" I bought a video from the Joe Nall fly in, and there is a guy in the video that says he covered his plane with "fabric and dope". I still don't know what "dope" is.

Here is one definition from theaerodrome.com:

Dope
A preparation painted on the wings of an aeroplane in order to render them taut and weatherproof the fabric

No I didn't.

Ok, Yes I did

We're getting some great questions here. As you guys can see, we have a monumental task ahead of us.

kd7oir makes a very good point, and that is one of our goals - To point out what is NEEDED first, and mention what makes life easier as a secondary thing.

Example: A method of flipping the prop is NEEDED. Fingers are BAD. A Chicken Stick is GOOD. An Electric Starter is BETTER, but not a necessity.

From the aspect of R/CU as a business entity, I think it's very important R/CU also think about where-in the liability exposure lies. As a consultant in my last business, this was something I had to think about constantly. That is why many of my posts defer from actually making recommendations. There are really two very good reasons for doing this, one was just stated above, The Liability. The other (which is really even more important) is relieving the newcomer to the hobby from doing his/her own due-diligance. Many people like to throw their egos and opinions around to espouse themselves as true masters of this art. However, by recommending equipment and such, your not giving the new guy the opportunity to think on his own and answer his own questions. Remember the best teachers don't give the required answers but teach the student how to find the answers themselves.

Some of the questions that I have are:

What is the proper angle to mount an engine or electric motor and why?

How do you repair a hole in the covering?

This FAQ section will be one of the greatest assets that a new or semi new pilot can have. Keep up the good work.

I understand where you're coming from on this one, I really do. But, speaking from relative newcomers perspective (only been at this about a year) sometimes you don't know what you don't know! That's where this FAQ will come in handy.

A good example is I had no idea you could by an electric starter that is "panel ready". I didn't even know what "panel ready" meant. All I knew is when I bought my gear, I had a fuel pump and an electric starter with alligator clips and when I went to hook it up to this cool looking thing the guy at the hobby shop said I needed with my field box, all I had was positive and negative holes. If I'd known you could buy these things panel ready, that's what I would have done. Instead I had to ask my father in law to help me solder the leads on my new equipment.

This is one area where I think the FAQ can come in handy, educating the newcomer on what to watch out for when purchasing new gear.

I'm not saying people shouldn't be helpful and explain things which need explaining, or where to find answers to the questions beginners have. What I don't agree with is people giving a recommendation which really only expresses their own personal bias, like; which trainer, which 2nd plane, which low wing, which is the best 3d, which radio, which engine, which fuel, which flight box, etc. etc. is the best.

I figured out along time ago that although I certainly use the best stuff, other people think they use the best stuff and they ain't using the same stuff I use.

Your point is noted. Considering the people involved, it's safe to assume that when choices are available, rather than endorsing a specific product or brand, guidelines will be given to help the beginner make a choice. This will happen for many reasons including a desire to not have the information get outdated, recognition of the fact that different products are available in other markets, and differences of opinions among the authors on which brand is "best".

This is a great idea guys and best of luck sorting it all out, but i have the faith in you all to do it. I see how well you handle the task at hand. Just a few questions i hear but do not think i saw.

What is the "buzzing sound" my servo is making?
How many props should i get and wood or "plastic"
How many rubber bands should i use? (why shouldn't i criss cross them?)

if i think of more i will chime in. Thanks

That is absolutely correct. We're going to all sit down as a group and look at all the available choice, then discuss every avenue of options, consider each position, evaluate all possibilities, and then do it Ken's way!!!!!!

And that brings up another question:
"What should I do to a prop before I use it?" (or what happens when I don't sand off the flash?)

I agree with mode one. I think everyone should drive a few into the ground (like I did) before someone finally steps up and helps (not that I did'nt ask).

Tadracket, What the "bloomin' blue blazes" are you talking about? I don't recall making any such statement or inference!

I also think you guys are being way to thorough. This thing doesn't need to be, nor can it possibly be, all encompassing. Give them enough information to get a good start. Believe me you can't cover all the bases. Even trying is an exercize in futility!

It seems to have been overlooked, but I'll say it again: If you guys want a QA for spelling/grammar, I'd be happy to help. Just let me know.

I want to contribute to this in some way, and I don't know if the questions I listed will be the most useful, but I know I can help with editing.

My Qualifications:

BA in English (Creative Writing)
Current Job, Quality Assurance Specialist with a Government Contractor (yeah, I know, that's kind of an oxymoron)
