It's really not all that hard to learn on your own. Get something like a slow stick, and a very large unobstructed wide open area, and just take off. If you buy a slowstick plane then make sure to get about 4 to 6 extra props as you will probably break a few of them with nose in landings. You can also get a flight simulator to help you get down the practice of "steering" the planes when they face you and when they face away from you.
My first plane was the slow stick and the owner of the LHS offered to teach me, but I went out on my own the first couple times, then went to one of his "lessons" and was completely bored silly and really didn't like him invading my space by standing behind me with his arms around mine and on top of my hands on the controller. I found it was easier to break a few propellers on a plane like the slowstick and learn myself how to fly then it was to go at such a slow learning pace as that of which the LHS owner was willing to teach his students.
Im just mentioning this incase you dont find someone local to help you fly.
There are of course buddy box's that will allow someone to instruct you with his tx attached via cord to yours, but my teacher didnt use these for beginning lessons.

Once you find something close, start sending emails or making calls. The Local Hobby Shop (LHS) is also a great source for this information

it off woodley ave in the west end of the park.
don't teach yourself to fly. you might as well take what you have put it in the fire place and use it as kindling, it'll be more productive and you won't risk the publics well being, there isn't much open space in OC. I know I'm being a hypocrite because I taught myself, started on CL, move up to slope soaring and thermal duration then onto power and servral years of Flight simulators among other gaming growing up. There are at least 15 instructor around there. I'd train ya but I'm about 3 hours from there. If for some reason you do try traing yourself I'd recommend a ZAgi slope soarer and chuck it off the cliff

Mike,
Like I mentioned in another of your threads, the closest field and clubs to you are in Corona and Trabuco Canyon. I can help you get in touch with the Corona club so you can begin taking lessons. I also know that there is no safe place for you to learn 'by yourself' in all of OC, at least not with a traditional glow trainer.
There are rumors of a new field being developed in Irvine in several months, but you can't count on that right now. You will likely solo in just a few lessons, but the sim will NOT teach you to fly a plane. Join AMA, a club and start your lessons, so you can fly on your own after summer is over.
Also, pick a college with a RC field on campus.
