Default Hiding the antenna

This question probably has already been posted but i did a search on RCU and found nothing.
Im just about to cover my 4* and ive been wondering where am i going to hook up the antenna. On my kadet i put it under the fuse and with the expetion that it can get a little dirty from the exaust it worked great. (Never came loose and cant see it). Although now with a taildragger im not sure it will work the same. I don't like the antenna where it graps onto the back of the fin. Its to visible.
Could it be run through a tube to the end of the fuse and then stick out about an inch from it?
Im just wondering about your prefereces on how to hide your antenna on taildraggers?

Thanks for your replies,

Papa

I run mine inside a leftover length of goldenrod or similar material and place them inside the fuse. Try not to run it too near the servos and hold in in place with a couple of drops of CA. Just be sure to do a range check before your first flight, I've not had a problem to date with this setup.

Good luck.

Directions on the Sig Somethin' Extra has the antenna running through a tube inside the fuse to the back of the plane. It exits the tube and just hangs out the back of the plane.

Works great.

Nice tip RedWing, I think I'll give that a try with the Hog Bipe I'm currently building, as the fuse is 6" shorter than the 4 star.

Just for clarification, I assume SigFan means to use a couple drops of CA to hold the goldenrod tube in place. I would never use CA directly on the antenna.

Default My 4 *

Here is what I did on my 4 *. It's a gold n rod running out the back with a plastic tie strap that was heated up and shaped around a drill bit.

Is it safe to run the antenae through the fuse without running it through goldenrod?

coomarlin,

If you are reffering to my setup, the antenna does run in the gold n rod, which runs the whole length of the fuse internally then sticks out the back what you see in the picture.

If you run the antenna in the fuse make sure your not using steel push rods or you will have interference. Running the antenna in a tube helps you to remove and reinstall the antenna. Before you push the antenna in the tube put some talcum powder in your hand and pull the antenna through it, it help the antenna slide in the tube easier

or what i did for my SE. run a piece of mono fishing line through the tube, and then use a VERY small amount of CA to glue the line to the end of the antenna. (many antenna's have a hollow area with only covering, no wire, at the end, makes it much easier) then just pull it through.

rkramer,

I used a similar procedure, you may have told me about it.
I used a very thin, single strand phone wire to do the fishing through. The antenna wire itself is too flimsy. I also used a small amount of ca to connect the two.

Good Advice rkramer

I ran the antenna on my Four Star out the bottom of the fuse, just behind the wing. It works fine. I do have a different tail wheel bracket, so the back end sits up a little higher than a stock Four Star, but I think you'd be okay with this setup.

Default Glue

strato911

That's exactly right, I didn't mean to imply putting glue on the antenna at all. Just a drop or two on the rod itself to keep it from shifting around in the fuse.

If it needs to be removed for any reason, a simple twist removes the whole rod. Thanks for the clarification!

Default I ran my antenna through a piece of

tubing that came in my 4*60 kit. The Rx is right behind the battery. Antenna wire comes out and goes to the top of the fuselage and behind the servo tray. Thats where my tube picks it up and takes it into the space behind the cockpit in the turtle deck. I sheeted my turtle deck and so I was able to slide the tube and antenna down the top side of the turtle deck between the formers. Length was just right so I did not have to take it out of the plane at all.

If you go to my profile and click on my RC Homepage, go to pictures and go to the 4*60 album on page 2. I think there is a pretty good picture of what I'm talking about.

Hope this helped a little........
