Default Initial Setup

I am just getting started in RC airplanes, and have done many hours of reading and research in these boards and other websites. To start out, I purchased a Futaba 9CAP radio system, a Hobbico Avistar 40 ARF and an O.S. ,46LA motor. I also started a field box using the B&D toolbox from Home Depot (Thanks Billy Hell and friends). Are there any warnings / cautions regarding my choices for a first system? (Especially the Avistar as opposed to a Superstar 40 ARF?

P.S. Although I made these choices without consulting a local club/expert, I do plan on seeking the help of a flying club to help me learn how to fly.

I am not too familar with Your set up, But Please go thru with Your plan to seek help from a club, it is best to have someone check the balance, throws, hinge points, etc. Most clubs will train new members for free, and may have guys that just want to help You get into the air the right way.

Good luck and make the most of it, it is a great hobby.

Good selection on everything, especially the radio and engine. Both will provide years of satisfaction, and you probably will never outgrow the 9C. You may want to make another trip to Lowe's to get a $20 transmitter case to protect yours, since it is a valuable piece of equipment. Make sure to get a glow igniter and a starter for your engine to save some headaches.

Actually, I hollowed out an old camcorder case (camcorder has been out of order for several years), and installed new foam and cut it to fit the transmitter.

Default PERFECT

Everything you have done to date is PERFECT. The Avistar is a great trainer because it can be used longer and you won't get tired of it as quickly as a FLAT wing trainer. Can do more stunts.
I agree with a previous statement about the field equipment, starter, glow igniter, obviously a 12 volt battery. If you get a power panel get one with a charging stud for your glow igniter. Beats me why they make them with a glow igniter charging port/plug and ports for a glow clip but oh well am not a marketing expert. OH make sure you get a qualified instructor. Many individuals think if someone puts you on a buddy box they are instructors. False I have seen many people that have crashed beginners planes because they think they are instructors. Research your instructor like anything else. Ask some of the members who they think are the better instructors in the club.
