Hello Everyone!
I've been doing research on planes that I'm interested in for about oh....3-4 weeks now. Then I found this site. Man I love message boards and this one is fantabulous! Thought I'd finally jump in...
I'm a resident of Burbank, CA (if anyone's interested in) and soon going to sign up with Valley Flyers near Balboa park in Encino. Haven't found an instructor yet but I have a few numbers I need to call. So far my interests in trainer planes are the LT-40, Midwest Aero-Star and the Thunder Tiger. I'm also interested in park fliers but haven't decided which to save up to buy first. The park flier or a gas one!
Anyway, just wanted to drop a line to everyone and let you know that another sucker has been caught in this rc plane trap...hehe.
Oh and just in case anyone has one of the kits I've mentioned for sale, especially the Aero-Star, I'd be MORE than happy to take it off your hands!
Can't wait to have more conversations with all of you! Take care and stay safe.
mockV
p.s. At my first Valley Flyer meeting this month, I won a Predator 500 in a raffle! Can you believe the luck? Don't know whether to sell it to help with my first trainer or keep it for later on! :stupid: lol

MockV,
Welcome to your new addiction! I would keep the Predator unless you need to sell it to fund a trainer. It probably won't be long and you will be ready for it.
Yes, this is the best RC site I have found, a lot of great members and tons of info for RC'rs of every type and ability level.

Welcome to RC and the addiction. Valley Flyers has several excellent instructors --you don't even need your own plane to get started!! See you at the field

MinnFlyer,
That's a really good idea. I've been so excited of getting it for free at that meeting, that I hadn't thought of doing that!
They have a message board at the field too. I'm going to see the race event on sunday. I'll post it up then and see what happens.

I would stay away from trainer planes that are made of foam. They are almost impossible to repair if it gets banged in. I believe the Thunder Tiger is one of those. The LT40 is a very solid plane and a great trainer . The Midwest is also very good.

The LT 40 with a good 46 bb engine would be an excellent choice and it comes as an ARF. Welcome to a sport that most parcipitants have a diffrent view point, but we all have fun anyway.

I've decided to go with the Midwest Aero-Star .40 kit. KenLambert has offered his for $75 shipped on the kits for sale section. I got some good points to decide on a kit first. Also, I really enjoy building projects. This one should really test my skills! I can't wait to start. Haven't gotten a pm or response from him yet though.
I'm also gonna be looking for some books to help me in the building/covering and set up of the plane. I've been doing quite a bit of research so far, but there's still a lot of stuff I need to find out. Found some books on Tower Hobbies with help of this thread.
Like first of all, could anyone give suggestions for a good engine? This is one of the areas I'm reading up on too. Like the difference between bb and bushing engine types and the good/bad brand names. I'd like to get something where I wouldn't have to upgrade to later but something I can still keep control of....and have fun too when off the cord!
Man, I'm getting even more excited just typing this! Well, you guys will be hearing from me in the near future on my progress. I got a digi cam too, so I'll be posting pictures!
Thanks for all the help.
James

I started with an Avistar. It's a 40 size trainer as well. I put an OS 46FX on it. It seems to be an easy engine to run and plenty of power. It really helps to have the extra power, it saved me a couple of times from a major crash. If you do go with a .46, you might want to run it at 3/4 throttle at max until you get more comfortable w/ higher speeds. After you get better, the extra power and speed makes it a lot more fun in my opinion. Good Luck and welcome to the addiction.
