Default Quickie 500

I recently bought an old "quickie 500." (or that is what the guy seed it was" He bought it in a bulk buy some time last year. Hes seed "as is" the plain is flyable but a little nose heavy for some maneuvers (bought it as a second plain/sport/combat/beater plain). He also did not know the recommended "control throws." (seed as i fly I will get a feel for CG and control throws.) Tonight I checked all screws , cleaned every inch of mono-cote, and set the control throws. If weather permits I will be flying tomorrow.

I really guessed at the angle of the control throws (used ~the same angle as my PTS P-51) and added -25% expo for low rates and gave all surfaces ~45* throw with 50% expo for high rates. Dose this seam reasonable for the first flight? Ill up date tomorrow after flight.

The throws really depend on where you balance the airplane. In quickies set up for racing, the total up elevator is usually only 1/8" to 3/16" measured at the trailing edge of the elevator. But we are also balanced at about 2 3/4" to 3" from the leading edge.

If you set the airplane up more nose heavy, you can use more throw on the elevator, about 5/16" - 3/8" with it balanced at 2 1/4 to 2 1/2" should get you in the ballpark.

It's balanced ~ 3 1/8 in (from LE). I plain on learning more aerobatic stuff with this plain (to keep my P-51 around longer(already crashed 2 times)). I think i'm going to change the prop from a 9X6 to a 10X5 or 4 on the 40la. For tomorrow i guess i will use your recommendations.

I'd move the balance forward to the 2 3/4" point if at all possible to start with. If you need lead, you can pack it in the rear of the engine crankcase with a bit of foam to isolate it and hold it in place. 9-5, 9-6, or 10-5 should work well with the LA.

Quickie's are a blast, but they are . . . quick. As mentioned, you don't need much control throw (they're built to go fast and turn left). Our club president lost a wheel on his (also with a .40LA) and he brought it in with the most beautiful slow flair and just did a little quarter turn when it touched the grass. They actually fly very well as sport models. But, I doubt you'll need 45º throws. Set dual rates and punch in half that for the low and flip up to there on high. I bet you'll find 15º elevator enough for full speed loops.

Thank you, Charlie P.
HighPlains told me it as probably a Scat Cat 500, so i'm going to do some research on the plane.

That's a clue. Contact Lone Star Balsa. They used to offer the Scat Cat kit and may know the throws offhand.

If it's a Scat Cat 500, you'll love it. But they do land faster than the Bridi Quickest 500 or Spickler Quickie 500. They are very rugged, and as a sport plane fly nicely on an LA .40. Mine is now 26 years old, retired (until I get a wild hair to fly it again), and after over 2500 flights is still airworthy needing only and engine, fuel tank and radio.

First flight attempt:
Perfect weather ~3-5 mph wind slight cross wind
Good radio rang
Good servo direction
Poor engine tuning + low glo-starter = grounded

Now charing glo-starter for ~30 min and try again

hogflyer,
I'm use to bringing my P-51 PTS in hot (taught my self how to land one day when tired of waiting for instructor to show up)

glo-starter charger is dead, so I'm waiting until ~2:15 to go to the field with the previous owner (this would be the plan but he was going gliding, but that got canceled) so i can get the right throws and a good starter.

but i cant wait to fly it I'v only heard good thing about this plane and cant wait to fly it.

I finally flew the plane today around 3. It was every bit what i was expecting, fast, aerobatic, but a plane to keep low and close to you. My lowest high speed pass was at ~15ft, did one snap role (it entered sluggish but snapped 2x as fast as my PTS). Landings were interesting, got to learn to slow it down before landing (ruff runway), take off's very fast and has an incredible climb rate. Flys exactly where you point it and dose not drift (my PTS drifts very badly)

I need to replace the spinner (broke spinner on start up) and replace the prop with a 10X5or 6 (the previous owner recommended 10X6, currently 9X6).

Sorry for not posting a pic in this form but i do have one on my profile under models.

Very exited that this plane is a new type of plane to learn.

Glad it went well for you Zach. Wait till you fly a quickie with a strong engine in full race trim. One with a Nelson can climb at about 10,000 feet per minute. Only military jets will out climbs one.

i have fallen for this plane. I absolutely love flying it. My only complaint is the lack of aloron control throw. I am thinking of getting a 6V battery and trying a moose can muffler. Is there an easy way to get more aloron control thow?

I found that my plane on the aleron servo would bind on way and not the other, i replace the old FP-S148 with a new S3004 and it seams to help. I checked all mechanical linkage and could not find out why it would bind (my guess is that it is part of going fast and turning left). Are the S3004 better than the s148?

You'll find the Scat Cat is one of the most rugged plane's you find. The landing gear block is maple, and runs from outboard of one gear to the other. Mine has taken two hits from wind shear. Out of a 800'+ full throttle power dive with a pullout to about 2' the wind currents over some pine trees slammed it down into the ground. Hit hard enough that the wheels left black marks on the yellow Monokote behind the wheels. To this day the wing is as solid as the day I built it. While you can slow the plane down, don't let it get to slow or it will bit you. When you get the ailerons straightened out, you find it will easily roll 720Ëš/sec, and will do a double snap faster than most planes can do one. I don't think you can break a Scat Cat in flight with out hitting something with it.

The S3004 servo should fly it just fine (the S-148's are also more than adequate) - check the linkage to find out where it's binding, and make sure the pockets where the control arms come up through the trailing edge are clear and allow for full movement. I had to open mine up quite a bit to allow for a lot of up throw.

when replacing the servo i noticed the wing had a foam core did the scat cat have this?

I wanted more alerons to do a blinder, i'm going out as soon as i get done eating to try some. Would this plane befit form a 6V battery?

It hovers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I did not mean to hover the plane just came in low and very slow. It looked like it was about to stall so I gave it full throttle with full up elevator and it popped into a hover! It not only hovered but pulled out of the hover (la 40 with a 10X6 has more than 4lb of thrust?), i came out of the hover and landed (to calm my nevers). Fueled her back up and hovered another 3 or 4 times and the wind picked back up and i no longer had the ruder or elevator to keep it vertical.
