Well Tattoo

Everyone is going to make a mistake in the R/C world sometime,

I still have all, well most of my balsa planes, but there is more and more space for my SPAD planes.

I think SPAD is very nice planes for some one that wants to fly. I have some scale balsa planes that I do take to the field but that is ones a month and then I fly it ones, my spad I fly everytime and I fly low invert over the runway and ( try ) scrape the rudder on the runway.. only because I CAN.

it gotta crash----

I have lost 2 turbines because of retracts failure and the turbine suck up everlast piece fiber, ply and bust it could get.

----

Spaddlers .. lets leave this upto the newbe,, they need to get the motor they need to get the radio and they need to be able to tell there grandchildren later that " when I was your age we use to fly planes made out off wood son"

It won't seem that big when you get it up in the air.

One of the guys at the shop recommended the Hangar 9 Easy 2 instead of the LT-40. Before he told me anything I noticed that the Easy 2 seemed more durable I guess because of its metal landing gear ( the back tires) compared to the ones in the LT-40 that are spring wire.

Actually, the wire holds up pretty well and keeps bendings back into shape after six months of increasingly gentle (hehe) landings. I might look for a better nose wheel, I had a guy at the field try and bend mine straight while it was still attached and he ripped the nose wheel mount off the firewall. Its not that hard to pull off and straighten.

If it wasn't for the overwhelming reaction from most of yall on the LT-40 I would have chosen the Easy 2.

Aargh, your gonna start another war. :-) Seriously, the LT-40 is a great plane. But the Easy 2 is more than capable of doing the job too.

I think the LT-40 is my choice, 95% sure. The guy at the shop told me that the OS 46FX would be a great engine for this trainer. They told me as well that if I was serious about the hobby which I am, to go with a 6CH Futuba Radio (6XA...) which costs $220.00.

I got an OSFX 46. It is more expensive, but it is very reliable. I never regretted the extra cost. I started with a JR 662 (6 ch), but looking back, the 5 channel 421 would have been enough for my first and second planes.

These are the prices I got together:

LT-40 kit: $135.00
OS46FX Engine: $115.00
6CH FUTUBA Radio $220.00

TOTAL AMOUNT: $470.00

OUCHH!!!

That's a lot of money!!!. I have gone to ebay an see that I can get all of these for a total of $357, more or less. This is still expensive!

I figure I got about 144 hours of fun out of my trainer in six months (and I'm not done with it). This includes assembly, flying once a week, tinkering with it, and the minor repairs and modifications.

I figure its averaged to about $3.50 an hour. Less than going to the movies.

My plans are just to get my LT-40 kit for now, put it together, and once I am done, I would then get the radio, and then engine.

Yes, this will distribute the cost over many credit card bills. Should help to sooth any wifely concerns. (Assuming you're married).

,ay,ay! CARAMBA! can you believe that this the 98th reply to this thread?

I thought the SPAD Jihad got out of hand (again).

Just for arguements sake... about crashing in a training environment. Here's how I view it.

Major crash - aircraft destroyed, or needs "rekitting"
Minor crash - aircraft can't be fixed at the field but probably ready next week
Ding - aircraft can be made flyable at the field (broken prop, bent landing gear, etc.)

So, using last years training class at our field (5 -6 trainees)

Major Crashes - 1
Minor Crashes - 1 every 2 weeks or so
Dings - Many, many

I think under these criteria, everyone's references to crashing make sense. Since some people refer to what I would call a ding as a crash.

Ghostbear,

Can we all just agree to disagree?

Imcruz,

Good choice, Hope you enjoy the plane. That OS fx will be an engine that will last a many plane. Unless you smash it into a tree and crack the housing and bend the shaft, like I did. oops. Very expensive pilot error. Well engines come and go, just be careful and enjoy. Cherrish your first flight, It is a one in a lifetime feeling.

ALL,

One thing this thread did prove. We are all very passionate about our hobby, so let us all be friends regardless, what we fly.
See ya at the field.

I see you don't want to build something right now and want an ARF. I built the LT40 and understand the work involved and the fragility of the thing. If price is a problem go with an Airmadillo Kombat 40 trainer from the Airplane factory ($85 and all parts to build are included) which is a spad in kit form. Buy the Futaba Skysport ($140) radio 4 channel, and get a OS46LA for about $60. Add in the servos and receiver and battery and you are at close to $400. Then you can go fly in a short time with a durable plane. Buying or making a short wing for the trainer will let you advance from beginner stage later on. That setup will give you lots of fun and teach you to fly. Then build a simple Spad like the Saturday night special and advance more. Bigger engines and radios can come much later. Only way to beat this cost wise is to find some used equipment. Good luck

I'm glad to know you got to the lhs to look at their trainers. Both should suit you just fine. The osfx is a good engine choice, should haul either trainer around just fine. The wire landing gear is a pretty good standard so don't let that be the only reason for a choice.

Good luck

Well,

I finally bought something. I got the Thunder Tiger trainer 40 instead of the LT40. It was $150 bucks cheaper than the LT40 since it was flown once.

I took it out for the first time Sunday the 16th and so far I've had a blast. I love it!

Anyways, I got a 7 day guess pass to fly at my local field but since the 7 days are now over I am just gonna fly this thing at a huge isolated field where there is even a nice long and wide "runway" for free.

Well, I'd just thought let you guys know what I did.

thanks for all of your help.

Imcruz,

Glad to here you got a plane you are happy with. My first plane was a Tunder Tiger 60 with a TT 61 pro on the front. Very tough for a balsa plane. Only had a couple of problems with mine, maybe these will help you out in the future. First problem I had was the covering. It is a stick on covering and if you get any spots that get creases or seem even a little flexzble, tighten it. Mine decided to shed its covering on the left wing on its second flight. Luckly my trainer brought it in with min damage to the rest of the plane. So I recovered it and went back out. Still have the plane (in one piece) but opt not to fly it now. The only other problem I had was the fuel tank leaked, easy enough replaced.

Good luck with your plane and happy flying

Hey SVTCobra,

Are you sure your info is correct? An LT-40 would be waaayyyy underpowered with a .25 engine. May be you were just adding the engine in the sale and not intending it for the plane?

Default hi

Its the smaller Kadet......... wingspan is 48" and the plane weighs next to nothing....... the engine actually roars in the thing......... sorry for the confusion

Just an observation on the LT40. I built one for my first kit and flew it many times with a OS46Fx. First crash broke the motor mounts and I replaced the engine with a OS32Fabc. It flies just as well as a trainer and I think that it would even fly with a 25Fx. Not powerfull but would fly. Smaller Kadets should have no problem with the smaller engine.
