Default Antenna Shroud - Do You Need It?

I'm referring to the white coating around the antenna.
If I was to route it out my Corsair I would route it through a mast and then back to the fin like the full size Corsair. For more of a scale appearance I would like to strip the shroud off of the antenna leaving the bare metal so that it would look more like the real thing.

I know I would need to coat it with something to keep it from unraveling, but other than that would this be a bad thing to do?

The pictures shows what I am referring to. The green line is the route of the antenna.

I wouldn't do it. You gain protection of the wire from the insulation covering and it helps to strengthen the wire. It's also easy to nick and damage the wire while removing the insulation of afterward. If you are that worried about a scale appearance go with a 2.4 radio system and the entire antenna will be inside the plane. The external antenna will be all show and can be anything you want.

One question I have is what size plane is this? The reason I ask is that the antenna wire is only about 39 inches long. Unless this is a relatively small plane, I don't think it will reach all the way. Personally, I wouldn't recommend doing this as it will be easier to break the wire.

If you want to use something instead, you can get some black fishing line. I'm no fisherman, so I don't know exactly what it is, but it is NOT the monofilament type. It's a braided multistrand line. I found it at a local sporting goods store.

Thanks for the input. I think I'll just get some guitar string to make it look like the full scale antenna.

This is for my 82" Corsair.

Route the antenna thru the fuse. Go to a sewing store; you will find something that will look fine. They have elastic in several colors, I believe.
