Default My first Glow engine

After starting w/ an electric..my First glow engine is on its way. It is an O.S. 46 AX. What does a beginner in glow need to know about the engines and maintenance?

Seek out a modeler with glow experience, follow the mfg instructions on run in procedure
after run oil should be used when in long periods of storage, a week or two with out will not harm the engine
lots of good info here & other web sites.

One thing you need to get into the habit of, for long engine life, is to run the engine dry. After you have done flying for the day, pump any remaining fuel out of the tank (normally back into the fuel jug ), then start the engine and let it run out any fuel that is remaining in the engine.

Expect your 1st glow plug to only last about 5 - 6 tanks of fuel. While breaking in the engine little bits of stuff come off the inside of the engine and USUALLY short the plug out after 5 - 6 tanks of fuel.

I do not believe that OS provides a glow plug with the engine. Use OS #8 plugs. They are the best I have found for my OS 2 stroke engines.

I have this engine on two planes. Fine selection you've made.

For after run oil, if I won't be flying my planes for a while I drop a half dozen drops of 3-in-1 oil in the carb and turn the prop a few times to work it back into the crank case and the piston by tipping the plane up and back. Otherwise, between trips to the field, the residue left behind in the engine by the cool power I run from a day's running seems to be fine. I fly at least once a week at this point. Everyone has some different opinions on this. This has worked for me.

If you have someone at the field to help you tune it, this would help. Some basic rules to follow once it's broken in regarding the low speed needle to get it to idle but not load up and the high end needle to run it just rich enough - ton of posts on this board regarding this. As E-Mo stated, follow the break-in procedure in the manual. The prop specified is to give the proper 'prop-load' while breaking in. Don't have to fly with this prop though if you don't want.

Keep your fingers out of the prop when it's running. You can damage the prop.
