Default Hinges

How do I fasten these hinges in my TF P-47, do I glue them in? http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...&P=SM&I=LXD941

I have never used these before, thanks, Dave Trimmer.

I glue them with "Pacer Hinge Glue", but epoxy will also work. Just make sure you apply "Vaseline" around the hinge point so the hinge will not bind.

Hi ,
I have used these hinges before and I used Epoxy with a little vaseline on the joint where it hinges. These hinges I dont like, and I do not use them any more. The slot has to be cut wide, the gluing can be time consuming and tricky, even properly installed they leave a gap that can cause flutter when flying.
Ask around you may want to use another style hinge.

To avoid the gap, cut a recess in to the moving surface. Done correctly, you can get a gap just as small as any other hinging technique, though I'll admit to not using those kinds of hinges much anymore either.

Agree with Dan and Minn here. I prefer to use Robart Hinge points, but the CA's will do just fine as well.

agree with the above....CA hinges are another reason why i became excited when returning to this hobby.
use to use the Dubro's religiously, but really hated the time they consumed, and if the recessed slots weren't right, you got binding.

make your life and hobby all the fun it can be, and get the CA hinges.

I like them. Sure, they take a little longer to install, but at least they are a real hinge, not a make believe hinge. Melt the vaseline with some heat so it liquifys, fold the hinge, dip it in.

i like pinning my plastic hinges with a toot pick myself, but for ease on most surfaces i would use ca hinges.on a big warbird over 60 size i would use rpobart or dubro metal pin hinges.

Use the hinge slot machine and also recess the moving surface slightly. Use hinge glue and you won't need to worry about Vaseline either. Either that or Robart hinge pins. Don't like CA hinges myself. Some do, that's fine they can have my share.

The hinges will hold a little better if you scuff them with some medium grain (100 to 150 grain) sand paper before installing them. Roughing the surface will help the expoxy hold.

Ok Dave, if they are already partially installed, all you need to do is smear a little vaseline on the pin area, and then smear a THIN coat of epoxy on the hinge (You don't need much on the surface but make sure you get it in the holes) if you can work a little into the slot (In the wood) that's a bonus.

Put the surface on and wipe off the excess epoxy with alcohol

I use the CA hinges and like the way the CA strengths the surrounding area. But have used pin style for repairs when a CA has been rip out. I mix up the epoxy and then us a straw and draw some adhesive into it , then I insert the straw in the hinge opening and squeeze a little epoxy in each one. And just in case , I seal both sides with Mono. So far, so good.
