Default For what it's worth

I went out to the field today on a hot Sunday afternoon expecting the field to be crowded, only to find 3 people at the, and only 2 were flying. There had been a fly-in yesterday, and I guess everyone went to church and stayed out of the heat today. Anyway both of them were having trouble with their planes, one with a screwy servo, the other with loose motor mounts. I haven't soloed yet, and so after I while of just watching, I asked if anyone would mind if I did my ground school, and I would certainly get out of their way. I have a trainer with a big wing and and in the sort-of stiff wind I couldn't get even a couple turns on the bumpy grass runway without a tipover that killed the engine. They couldn't help but turn their attention to me and offered me nothing but advice.

I went thinking I would just watch others, but there is no end to the help total strangers are willing to offer a newbie. I especially love the old-timers who don't even fly but just go to the field on a hot day just to hang out. I love you guys! I hope some day to return the favor.

Seems to me you may be learning the true reason we do this hobby... The freinds you make, The BS you sling with them between flights (if you fly at all), and the satisfaction of helping a new guy experience the thrill.

You got that right. I think about all the days I DIDN'T go out, just because I can't fly or had nothing to offer.

Then there's the old-timer who I'll make his day just by sitting and chatting. Man, oh man, these are me people... and I'm theirs too.

You know, I went out Friday expecting a small turnout. And wound up buddy boxing 3 different guys. Helped a couple with balky engines and sorted a flight problem that turned out to be bad rigging combined with a badly setup computer radio (that was badly setup trying to cure the bad rigging). When I got home and started telling about the day, Alice said, "sounds like you had a good day, but how did the new prop work, did you fly any?" Oh yeah, and I maidened a guys new model that NEEDED somebody else to first flight it BIGTIME. It's unusual to be able to help so many in one day, but trust me, it's rewarding as anything can be.

After years and years of flying days that had showstoppers in them, it really makes you feel good to help people get at least a couple of good flights instead of no flights or busted airplanes.

Just remember the times somebody showed you what was wrong with your engine/fuel tank/whatever, or how to safely land that plane that scares you. And someday you can pass the help on. It's as much fun and enjoyment as those first successful flights of yours. Heck, it's more fun.

I agree completely. I have MORE fun helping others and shooting the breeze than actually flying sometimes. Just make sure to return the favor someday when you are one of the experienced guys at the field.
