What is a short kit?
#2
Short kits do not include all the building materials. Mostly the parts which can not be readily purchased at the LHS such as spars, music wire & misc. hardware. Short kits should include laser cut or die cut ribs, formers, plans for example.

A short kit is where all the wood that needs to be cut out (i.e. bulkheads, ribs, etc) is done. All the sheet stock, stick stock, etc. has to be bought from another source. I've seen some short kits come with molded parts like cowling and canopies, and even some with formed landing gear, but you'll have to verify on an individual basis what the kit comes with.

Like the others have said, it does not include everything. A full kit usually contains everything you need to build the plane. For example, I built the Top Flite Corsair. Just about everything was included - wood, rods, clevises, sheeting, decals, canopy, tires, etc. No glue, electronics, etc but everything as far as parts that were needed to build it.
Like hogflyer said, verify what comes in the short kit so you'll know what you will need to get.

And some planes that use sheeted foam wings come with the cores pre-cut, some give you templates and others just plans. The buyer MUST know what he is getting. Sometimes additional parts are available for an additional fee. Landing gear, canopies, cowls, wing/tail cores, additional wood, etc. Wing Mfg was a big supplier of short kits at one time. Many of the laser cutting houses also provide them.
Advantage: You get to pick the quality and straightness of the wood.
Dis-advantage: You have to pick the quality and straightness of the wood. Not always an easy task.

Dear
We are a team specialized in the conversion of R/C aircraft plans to CAD (DWG)
Separation and numbering parts of R/C aircraft, for short kit.
We accept jpeg, pdf and tif
This is not raster vector image. It's real DWG project.
Years of experience in conversion.

If considering a short kit its important to understand what you are buying as there really is no industry standard, for short kits. They can be almost anything, For example: Wing manufacturing kits someone mentioned above had great stuff.
I am using their Hal Parenti 70 inch P-38 in this example because I have built two of them. The short kits included the moulded stuff (canopy, turbocharger boom top decks, boom radiator covers and cowlings), foam wing cores, wing tubes and plans with templetes for the bulkheads and that's it. No wood at all. You could choose to also order a wood kit which did include all the lumber but no laser cutting, die cutting or imprinted wood you were expected cut the templetes and do you own marking/cutting.
Don,t get me wrong these were wonderful kits as well the best flying p-38 in that size and Wing had many other kits that were more like the above definitions so you need to understand what you are buying.
