I use a standard starter on my Mag 91 four strokes. If they are setting on the compression stroke, it won't pull it over, but I just rotate the prop clock wise to compression and then firmly place the cone on the spinner and hit the switch. The only time I've run into problems is with a weak battery. Start the engine a a low speed, the closed or partially closed throttle reduces the compression load and makes the starter's work eaiser. I have used the same starte on an OS 120. It worked, but it is pushing the limits.
One final thought, a worn cone will let the starter slip and chatter. Or a dirty and oily one.

I agree with everything Don said.
I have no problem at all starting my OS 91 FS with my Hobbico 90.
Just remember to rotate the prop clockwise as far as it will go easily so the starter gets a head start before it hits the compression stroke.
You might also want to try taking the glow plug out and turn the engine over with the starter for a couple of seconds.

I also agree.
Be sure your battery is fully charged, clean the cone and the spinner, be sure the prop is rotated clockwise to the compression stroke and only prime it a little if not at all. I have a Saito .82 and it doesn't need any priming to get started. At first, I'd prime it like a 2-stroke and it hydro-locked.
Oh, and also, I purchased a silicon cone and replaced the original Hobbico cone. The silicon seem to grip better and cleans up easier without bits and pieces falling off.

Sometimes it's a matter of the gel-cell not being able to deliver enough juice. You could try either a bigger amp battery OR put 2 gel-cells in parallel. Use good stout wires to the starter jacks to avoid power drops. I don't think you will have a problem charging these in parallel but if you do you can always seperate them for charging.

I dont know that much about the YS engines but starting a newer OS fs is next to impossable with a chicken stick.
OS recomends using a elec.starter.
I also use the Hobbico 90 starter with no problems on my OS 91fs they need a few revolutions to get over compression hump once it starts spinning it will keep going

A good battery makes all the difference. I can start a Supertigre 3000 with a Hobbico 180. but only after I switched to a MC battery. No gel cells for me...

I had the same problem with a Saito 180. My hobbico starter and field battery wouldn't start it. When I hooked the hobbico starter up to my car battery via jumper cables, it started the Saito right up.

What flypaper2 said, the Kavan is without doubt the best of the 12 volt starters. It cost a couple bucks more than some but is worth every pennny. I even start my Quadra 35 and G23 with it with ease. A good battery also helps, most small gell cells are to whimpy, try a garden tractor battery.

Hobbico 90 is turning it over now. I got another club member to start and run it to break it in. My original gel cell batt will start it now.

If you run it on 24V, you might be able to strart a small block chevy!
The Dynatron is a very good starter and as long as you use a decent battery, should start the 1.25 with ease.

Make sure you get the right insert for the job. The gray rubber insert never worked as well for me as the white silicon version that is matched to the spinner's profile. Press it on tight - if you're scuffing rings in spinners you're not pressing it on tight enough.
And if you flood an engine it stops the starter cold with the added compression. Fuel don't compress like air do.

I also own a Hirobo Z Starter which is a gear reduction starter and was wondering if the optional battery case from central hobbie is compatible with my starter?
