How cold is too cold?

The hand warmer idea on the battery is A great idea.
I was just out flying yesterday and it was +35 when we started and went up to 40. The lighter fluid trick works great except on my YS but only because the carb is covered and sits upside down.
My only problem with the cold is the hands and eyes. My student was flying his new plane yesterday and that cold TX really got to him fast. A 10 minute flight was about it for him, when it gets down into the 30s and there is A wind he keeps on flying but I don't know how he sees anything with all the tears. Maybe young eyes?
My friends are flying off of snow in Oregon and NY but I think my sim and some corn squeezens is A better idea after it gets into the +30s, anything in the minus temps?? Sorry, I think you are out of your minds and would be holed up and building in A nice warm shop.[8D]

This is for those who have mentioned using Sir Barleycorn on supper cold days. I sometimes recall being in Army basic training in Fort Dix, NJ in 1954 in December/January. I recall having some Sir Barleycorn with me in a foxhole trying to stay alive with only summer clothing in near zero temps. I have since read and believe that using that in cold weather fools your brain into thinking that all is OK and you in fact will get colder. I now dress extremly warm and use very thin gloves while up in the air. The gloves allow me to fly for about 5 minutes. That is enought for me now.

I don't have my slide rule but -20ºC is like -4ºF in real temperatures. You got a ways to go yet. The airfolis (including the prop) love cold air, as it is denser. You can richen the carb settings and get away with it. The batteries and Monokote, on the other hand, start to complain at -10º or so (-23ºC, aye?, in Canadian, aye?).
When the Monokote starts spontaneously splitting with a "BANG!" on landing, then it's time to pack it in and get some coco in fromt of the wood stove.

If I have to wear long pants, a jacket and closed toe shoes, it's too cold to fly...[&:][&:]

[color=#FF0099]Dick,
You'll have to hook up with Doug Jones over there. He was Associate VP for District V last year and VP of MPPA as well before moving to the west coast. I'll have to get you his contact info. (you're still in Bradenton? I believe he is in Venice...down the road a piece)

Hey Dick it was 55 and no wind all weekend, not supposed to
drop below 50 for the rest of the week. So I guess what I am
getting at is, can you go away more often during the winter?
