Can some one help me out with the set up on a Saito 72. I am swinging a 13 by 7 prop max rpm 8500 and at low idle only able to get it down to 4000 rpm before it cuts out. Have had many guy's at the club adjust the low end idle screw, and yes it does say not to adjust it so now I need to try and set it up to fact setting. A guy at the local hobbie shop said to screw both top end and low end neddles in and then adjust them equel distance two turns as a basic setting and try from there is this a good way to start? It may sound a little confusing oh and 10 % nitro also and side mounted.

Hi Alan thanks, we have tried the setting with the trim adjustment but will give it a go on Wednesday, I thought that you may be able to set the idle with low end screw but it seems not.

Did you read all the article about setting the throttle, it give mixture adjustments, & what happens when you make those adjustments.
There is a lot a very useful info.

You have to adjust the low end after the break in period ... as a baseline guide keep it flush to the throttle arm. That is a baseline to start from. Yes you set the low end to sort out your idle. It should idle at about 2,200 RPM or so ... if you can 15% nitro does make it idle nicer too, 25% is sweet as pumkin pie!

30% is even better!

Hey jason which club do you fly at on the gold coast? From my experience with saitos, 82, 125, 180, 220 2 turns out on the HS is going to be too lean, especially if this motor is new. If you've totally lost the tune set the HS back out at 4 turns then run it up to full power and back it off till u get max rpm, then back it off another 500rpm or so. For the low speed like was stated before you can adjust it to flush with the plastic. Once you have done this adjust till you get a clean transition. (hesitation too rich, motor dies too lean). As for your high idle sounds like the tune is too rich to me. Hope some of this is of help.

If you are going to run those levels of nitro in your fuel make sure you put some after run oil into the engine after you have finished using it for the day, nitro is acidic and will do internal damage to your motor if you don't do this. I have a Saito 72 in a PC 9 and it runs very nicely on 10% nitro fuel, have a 13 x 8 prop on it so you are ok with your prop.

As for the low end needle adjustment if you are going to play with it just turn it out or in for that matter about an eigth of a turn at a time, it may take a lot of fiddling around but you will eventually get it right. These things are a bit fiddly but start by turning the screw out and putting more fuel into the motor, a rich running engine is ok but a lean running motor can be a short lived one. Remember that the engine leans out a little once in the air.

The problem with this hobby is that there are a lot of "experts" who play with things on other peoples planes and then walk away leavling a bigger problem than you had in the start. Find your the manuals and read them and don't run any castor oil based fuels in a Saito motor, according to the instructions use of Castor based fuels in Saito motors could blow your warranty.

Delta is right ... many 'experts' tweak your engine then they walk away leaving a pile of doo doo ... yeah stay away from castor, it leaves behind a gummy substance and also causes something like a lacquer residue.
