Default The engine started!!!

Yeah, it's not a solo story but I fired the engine up on the DuraPlane tonight and it ran. Hand started... Happy times. I ran through the recommended break in procedures for the OS 46. Nice switches from 2 to 4 stroke running with the mixture with the first tank. (after I fixed the swithced fuel lines.... I swear I marked them correctly).

Second tank... not so good. Leaned to recommended point... any other increase in throttle killed the engine.

Rain started... darkness fell... we'll wait until tomorrow to sort it out.

My thoughts are to:
1 refuel.
2 try to fire it up again.
3 observe.

It seems like it was "sucking dry" when I would try to push up the throttle. When I would try to "prime" it by blowing in the exhaust tube, it would sometimes seem to pause before I would see fuel flowing between the needle and the carb. Not sure of that's a blockage or what... something to keep in mind. Also, it seemed like there were a good bit of air bubbles flowing from the needle to the carb.

Long story short... it was fun but I have work to do. Unfortunately it looks like it won't be ready for a "once over" Thursday at the first club meeting. No worries.

Fingers crossed... Thanks to everybody here for the fantastic info.

I know the feeling of firing up a glow engine for the first time, I was pretty excited too. Not sure if you know this but if you open the carb valve all the way then cover it with your thumb and turn the prop over, that will also prime the engine. And if you tried going to full throttle and it died you may just need to play with the high speed needle a little more. If you cant figure it out I would recommend having someone more experienced take a look at it before you mess with the low speed needle. O.S. engines usually have the low speed needle set pretty close if not perfect from the factory. If you want to fly on Thursday just take the plane down to the field and break it in while flying with a instructor. Ive done it before, all we did was leave the engine on the rich side then we gradually leaned it after each tank of gas. Just make sure the engine is in a reliable state before flying it and also the instructor has dead stick experience for on the spot landings. Have Fun!!!!

I would be concerned with the air bubbles. You may have a fuel line with a hole in it and this could be the reason the engine will not run correctly. You may want to check your fuel tank and fuel lines for a leak. Good Luck, Dave

I just broke in my 46 and I've been running a 55. Mine when running way rich will run at half throotle and when advanced to full will sputter and die just like it is lean but it is RICH. Keep that in mind for next time. I have also flooded my 55 and it takes 30 seconds or more at half throotle before she will fully rev up. That sucking sound could be a rich engine. For starting I put finger over carb and turn prop 3 times and they fire right up. You will get the hang of these motors and it is a lot of fun after that. Good luck.

for priming, put finger on carb with throttle atleast halfway open and turn prop, u will see fuel gradually fill the line each turn. when fuel reaches the carb, turn 3 more full turns. then close throttle to about 1/3 open and start. works for me everytime

okay..it's the day after now, I'm pretty sure the engine had cooled down a bit by now
I'd bet ya it'll fire right up again.
