Default Engine for a stik 40

After much debating in my head I have decided to ask santa for a engine and servos for my stik 40 that was given to me. I will still ask for the Great Planes Cherokee maybe I'll get both[8D], I asked a guy at my club if a os 46 la would be good but after I have seen my debonair performe, I want a bit more and I would like to go vertical, my 46 just gets it around the field and I have to fly at full throttle, What is a bit powerful than a 46 la, I have had 2 OSs and I like em I dont know about the other brands, any suggestions would be nice, just to let ya know I just soloed sun. , and the stik will fly in 09, am I goin to fast? my mom works with our ex-president (taking a break from the hobby, sold all stuff including trailer for 6,000) so maybe he can help her out on what to get

Default RE: Engine for a stik 40

Fly boy2,

I have a couple of "Ugly Stiks" . They are 40 size. The OS.46la is not very powerful. I bought one a year ago on an impulse and I am still trying to figure out what to do with it. It is too weak for a 40 size and I don't want to fly anything smaller.
On my Main Stik I have a Magnum XLS.46. I use an APC 10x7 prop. I am getting 12700 to 13000 RPM's ( on the too lean side) My verticals are pretty good. I mean they are not unlimited. But they ain't bad for a 6LBS plane with thick symetrical wings. I also have a couple of Evolution .46NT's. These are good engines from my experiences. I use Omega 10%.

Good luck
Frank

fly boy2,

I have a Saito 82a on my GP 40 Stik and I use
throttle management. It's a blast. JMO,

ok, I would like to go vertical for a change but not too fast that it will ripe the wings off, I was told that it was a stik but it not like others that I have seen I'll get a pic

I flew a 40 size stick last summer with an os 70 surpass. Good vertical but not unlimited, but I think I used a wrong sized prop.

Never seen a stik that looked like yours?? Kind of like a DuroStick. They may be calling it that because the fuse does look like a stick of wood I wouldn't go too crazy on a powerful engine for that one, it appears the fuse is going to be pretty light. I would think any 40-46 size would zip it along very nicely. DG

fly boy2...I've seen those older style "stick" airplanes fly with O.S. .35's and .40's so IMO your LA .46 would work.

A Thunder Tiger .46 Pro is a good engine for the Cherokee...you might be able to break it in on the Debonair?

That sounds familiar...
A friend flew the heck out of one, back in the mid 70's...his had a flat bottom wing and an Ugly Stick (little stik, etc. ) style fin/rudder and an old O.S. .35 for power.

An easy airplane to scratch build, so I think I can correctly assume that there were probably quite a few variations?

What's the wing span of yours Fly Boy2 ?

that looks like the Balsa USA Stick 40, and thats the plane I learned on about 20 years ago. Its a great trainer plane, very strong. I had a Fox .40 on it , when I learned to fly with it. I wanted to fly it on water and had to go to a supertiger .46 to get it off the water with floots.

A .46 is planty of motor for that plane. I feel that with more motor, and all you will be doing is guiding a motor and not realy flying a plane. Don't get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with power and speed. I have a enya .80 XF with a tuned pipe on a super sportser .60 and its a very powerfull plane and I like it a lot.

I put a Magnum .52 2s on mine. Good plane for it. It had real good vertical yet slowed way down for landings. You can find them on sale for less then a $100.00.

Can't recommend the .46 TT highly enough.

Absolutley loved that motor, it just took one to many nose dives. Mine would flip start the first flip EVERY time, hot or cold(usually could spin it back against tdc and have ti fire with a fresh plug.)

A plane that works great with the OS 46LA is the World Models Skyraider Mach II.
Wrap the battery pack in thin shipping foam and then wrap that with clear shipping tape and fasten it under the engine mount (I made a Balsa tray on the bottom of the cowl cheeks to hold my battery there).
This plane / engine combo will do anything you ask it to do except hover.
Cheap plane, cheap engine. cheap fun.

Fly Boy 2, I have a OS 46ax and the older 46fx and they both have lots of power, Way more then my 46la. I had the 46la in a trainer then traded out for the 46ax and the difference was amazing. I now have my 46ax on a tower hobbies uproar and it has unlimited power.

sorry I've been away for a bit, I'll try to get the wing span tomorrow, both tape measures are in the barn[&:], From what what I've been told and from the condition of it and from what ya'll have said, its on old plane, it does have a sticker on the side that says IRVINE POWERED with a big E in the middle of the circle, I have never heard of that brand of engine but I bet you older folk have if that can give any clue on how old this plane is and what type

Irvine is a excellent engine brand from England. They were sold by Sig for several years until the US dollar - British pound exchange rate went sour. The early Irvines were a lot like OS engines. Nowadays the Irvines are made by OS.

You have a Balsa USA Stick 40 (with those barn door ailerons the wing has been modified or is from another plane). The design originated in 1973 as the Kwik-Stick series (I was .15, II was .049, III was .60 & IV was .35 powered) by George Chabot (RCM plans# 543a for I & III, and 543b for II & IV). The Kwik-Stick was designed to use what ever spare wing you happened to have on hand.

I've had several Swizzle Stick 40's (predecessor to the Stick 40 with the traditional stick tail) powered by anything from a K&B 3.5cc (.21) to an OS .30 FP and K&B Torpedo 40. I also have a Stick 30 framed up ready to cover. All the sticks I've had are very good flyers, and if kept light enough will readily thermal (I've had flights up to 2 hours).

Power wise you .46 LA is more than enough power for the Stick 40. I'd recommend keeping with your LA on it since you already have it and put a good .46 or .55 on the GP Cherokee or what ever you get for your next plane.

The wing is the right wing for the stick 40 , they call it the stick 40 plus and has had ailerons for some time. I am half way through building one as a test plane for anything I want to put on it. They are very strong planes with a lot of lift.

Here are some servo questions, 1. Do I need just standard ST47 JR servos that can be bought with a airpac , or do I need different servos, and 2. my debonair has one servo that controls both ailerons, the stik has dual ailerons, I was told to use a Y harness but won't that move both ailerons in the same direction, I have a JR sport if that helps, good thing I still have the manuel
