Default New Flyer here...

Good day.. I am new to the RC world.. Years ago a purched a foam plane I think it was a BEE something.. The think couldn't get off the ground after hrs of trying. I took it back to the hobby shop and was told it worked fine. Well I lost intress. Now I decided to pick up the hobby again. After a bit of research I found a few websites that have different plains. I want to get a Traner or an Intermediate plane made out of Balsa and plywood. What would you guys say would be a good plain to start with. Any help would be great.

Hobbico Nexstar .46 ARF (Glow). This plane is a great plane to start with, I started flying with it at the beginning of this year and now I'm all soloed up. This plane is IMO a very strong, sturdy, and forgiving plane. It will take the beating that a beginner will put on it. Although I recommend you visit your local club and get on the buddy box w/ somebody, you will get great advice and probably save some $$$. BTW do not use the AFS, you wont learn anything and when the time comes you can remove the training aids included w/ the ARF. Below I have posted a few links to various sites regarding beginning in RC.

If you're willing to join the AMA, and a local club, then you'd do well to get a .40 sized nitro trainer plane. If you want to teach yourself, then you'd be better off getting a small beginner's park flyer, like the Super Cub, Firebird Phantom, etc.

This will get you started in the right direction. [link=http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXCXF4**&P=0]Click ME[/link] It has everything you need installed on the plane(engine, servo's, linkage, etc.). All you would need after getting this is some nitro fuel, a chicken stick, glow starter, or you could just get this kit that has a beginner assortment of field equipment: [link=http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXL421&P=0]Click Me[/link] After getting all of this, the only thing left would be to find an instructor to get the best possible training and keep your valuable investment out of the trash can.

Not a good first plane at all.

The full scale AT-6 may have been used to train military pilots but it definitely is not an RC trainer. As a general rule, most scale planes aren't good when just starting out. This is especially true of warbirds.

Stick with some of the recommendations that have been made such as the Tower Trainer and similar. You'll have a lot better experience in this hobby if you do.

Absolutely not. This is not a first plane in any form or fashion. While it may be an easy flying for plane for somebody with flying experience, it is not for somebody that is learning to fly. In fact, I doubt that there are many instructors that would even attempt to teach somebody on this plane. The best advice here is to pick up a traditional trainer airplane and contact an instructor to learn to fly.

I understand that many people out there want to get their hands on a "sexy warbird" to fly and don't want to start flying with an "ugly" trainer airplane. But trainer planes are there for a reason. They are there to make it easy to learn to fly. Even full scale "fighter jocks" don't start out in their fighters, they start out on trainers to learn to fly. Unfortunately this is a process that just can't be skipped. All of us have been there and gone through the process of learning to fly on a trainer.

I've put together a list of planes that make good trainers and second planes. All of them on the list are proven planes that are well suited for successfully letting students learn to fly, or advance to a second plane. Check out the list here
[link=http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_4537845/tm.htm] Looking for a trainer- what's available. (Updated 2-20-2008) [/link]

Hope this helps

The first planes most WWII pilots flew were the PT-17 and PT-19. "PT" meaning 'Primary Trainer.'

The "AT" in AT-6 stands for 'Advanced Trainer' and I think it was the second or third plane a new pilot was trained in.

If anyone was woundering the first plane if tried to fly was the LAZY BEE... couldn't get it off the ground maybe had about 3ft of air for 30secs. Thinking back (this was a few years) not sure what the problem was.. Can I use the controler for another plane ?

That depends, what kind of radio is it? Most of the radios that come with the little foamies are not usable in larger airplanes but there are a few exceptions.
