Default tower hobby rx compatability issue?

My tuncano 40 has a tower hobby receiver, 72/27 freq. it came with a cheap Tx. So I went the LHS yesterday and bought a 36 cystal for the Rx so that I could use my Better JR Tx. This morning before work I switched cyrstals, turned on my jr receiver, then the flipped the switch on the tuncano, got just a tad of servo jitter. tried the sticks, nothing!! I did not swtich models on the Tx. What am I doing wrong, this should work, or at least I think it should. Do I need to pair the Rx and Tx some way? The Tx I'm using is a JR XF421EX.

Thanks

I beleive that the Tower receivers are Futaba compatible, but not JR. The two brands have different shifts for the pulse signal. You will need a JR compatible or "Shift-selectable" Rx.

Not really what I wanted to hear, but guess I'll have to spend the bucks on a new receiver. Figured it was something like that.

Bill, you can use any receiver that has the same shift and frequency as long as it is compatible. What I mean is, even a micro receiver that is full-range, and compatible with the JR will work. So, you can do a little research and see what one you can get and perhaps save a few $$$.

I don't know what receiver to recommend, but check out the Bergs. I have a 7P I believe, which is a seven channel and is full range. The P designation denotes programmable. The servos can be plugged in either on the top or the side. They are listed as horizontal or vertical servo pins. Just make sure you get what you want.. side or top, if you elect a Berg.

As the others have said, it's not compatible to your JR radio. For future reference Futaba and Hitec use negative shift while Airtronics and JR use positive shift in there receivers. This applies only to the 72 mhz radio systems and not to 2.4 ghz radios. For the 2.4 radios you must use the same receiver as transmitter as the radios are proprietary.

Thanks all,
The only reason I wanted to change it was for convienance. The Tx that came with it works. And being a rookie at the moment and still using my trainer. I could probably just save some bucks by learning to fly my trainer well, and by the time that happens. I'll be bored of the trainer and transfer the Rx over to the tucano, and by that time I should be ready for 2.4. HA! what a hobby!! I ride Harleys too, and they all ways say that HD stands for Hundreds of Dollars. Could call this hobby HD-RC!! LOL! But I am totally hooked!!!! Will spend whatever it takes! I am totally hooked! Just found out that all the guys at the field took off from work this afternoon to fly!! Now there's a thought!! Maybe I'll just have to join them!
Have a nice day all!!

Bill: Take it from me. Not that I've been around as long as RC'ers like Mike and RCKen, but I've learned to never get rid of the trainer. Keep it intact and fly it occasionally, once you solo. You may get sick of it while getting the basics down, but after that, you will always like to go out on a nice day and just do lazy circles in the sky.

But, what you will find that after you solo, and after you've had a few hundred flights ( ) under your belt, going back to the trainer just might be a challenge. Because you will no doubt be flying something that flys like it's on rails. Then out comes that old trainer that likes to float but hesitates when trying to do a neat and circular loop, or a nice steady slow rate roll, and you will have to re-learn how to fly that thing, which is always fun.

I have a plane that I bought a while back, based on a review done by Mike (Minnflyer). That's the Goldberg Protege. It is a high-wing aircraft that looks like a trainer, but is really a capable performer for what it is, even with a flat bottom airfoil. It has very little dihedral and, mine anyway, has an OS .75 AX engine. Like I said, more than capable, and it's a lot of fun to fly.

So, you may wish to reconsider removing that RC gear out of your trainer and pick up a flight pack for your next plane (flight packs are servos and an RX). Also, take a look at the Berg receivers. Very nice. Small and light yet powerful.

A practical approach to spending? With RC? Hey, wait until you go to your first "big show" like WRAM or Toledo. You had better consider one of two things: Either leave your checkbook/credit cards at home OR plan on bringing a van with you..

Yeah, the my only point was that I sold my trainer to someone that had crashed his. I didn't really want to but I did. He later died of cancer, unfortunately, and that was out of state or I would have tried to purchase it back from his estate. So, I ended up buying a club trainer and using that for two purposes: as a club trainer, of course, and as a trainer for me to fly when I wanted to fly a trainer. Thus the suggestion that you never throw it away.. keep it intact.

Believe me, you will want to pull it out on one of those days that flying something else just doesn't appeal to you... OR... you find a student (and yes, you will reach that level) that will want to learn RC and you will want to re-famialiarize yourself with your good old trusty trainer before you buddy box up with that student.

LEAVING MONEY AT HOME DOESN"T WORK
Went to a nice little local swap meet a couple weekends back without bucks. HAD to call the wife to bring me a C note! Saw a Bill Evans simitar DO DA with a 49 engine and a 6 EXA futaba radio installed for a C note. I went throught it with a fine tooth comb but was not able to detect a really bad glue joint at the wing bolt block[:'(] It is a good thing I am an EXPERT rebuilder[>:]
