Kit vs. ARF The battle continues. We will call it "Operation Futility" and march our crusaiders bravely against the enemy. Err... which side am I on anyway? There is a place for both in this hobby. I like taking an ARF and throwing it together in a night over a six pack as much as any other guy I guess. But there is a certain peace in all those pieces you find in a kit that an ARF will never provide. Unfortunately lazyness and instant gratification, as usual, seems to be winning the war. It is getting harder and harder to find a kit worth building. Soon a builder will only be able to get a Guillow's kit to satisfy his need to glue bits of wood together. I am 38 yrs old and have started collecting kits (including a Royal B-25, pre-Martuka). So when I retire I have more to do than die on the couch watching TV with 1/2 in calluses on my thumbs from playing X-Box and texting.

All I've ever built were ARF aircraft. I like the lack of time from when I get the the ARF and the time I can get to the field with it. And some scale ARF aircraft you can do a lot of extra detail to make the Ol'timers think twice their negitive thoughts about ARF. I plan on building a kit or two, right now I haven't decided what to build. If you have the time, space, skill and tools build a kit. If you are on a budget, don't have a lot of tools and work 40+ hours a week and raising kids, then a ARF would be perfect.

The number 1 question I get from people when I have my Hanger 9 Fokker DVII out at a show is, "Is it a Kit?" That's how good it is and many have a shocked look on their face when I tell them it isn't because of all the detail I've added. I like Kits and I like ARF, kits seem to hurt a little more when you crash them because of the time it takes to build them.

Kitbuilder said it best... I like them all as long it has wings. ( Blonde girls are so over rated though.) Don't forget, when a Blonde dyes her hair brunette she becomes artificial intelligence.

I like the bit about artificial intelligence. Can't wait to use it.

Ithink that if you put a little more time and effort into building the kit you will have a superior product to the ARF. Production line building may or may not be making the kplane as fine as it can possibly be, it is making it as fast as it can for as little money. That is hopefully tempered by the learned skills of the assembler, doing the same wing joint all day every day would in my opinion make someone quite adept at doing it. However life is life and it doesnt always work out that way.
SIGmakes a lot of kits that Ihope to build some day. However I do have a Little Extra ARF that is a very well made little machine.

I think the quality of ARF's initially was questionable, but has improved with time...I have a purple Herr Little Extra as one of my favorite models with an OS .15la on it and a teal one still in the box and no, its not for sale....so I have an extra Extra...Rog

I would build a kit...cause that's all I do.

Building teaches you more than you can learn assembling an ARF, and also puts you well above the average "hands on" abilities. You learn to measure, align, eyeball, modify, improvise, be patient, develop skills, etc...

I like building my kits while listening to the radio, drinking beer , relaxing, filling the air with balsa dust..no one to bother you. You can't go no better. Besides..you know the plane inside and out so it's easier to fix/rebuild when you stuff it.

ARFs are too easy for me. It would be equivalent to me still flying my trainer...no challenge.

But most importantly do whatever you want. It's YOUR hobby.

My first plane was a AFR [link=http://www.hobbico.com/airplanes/hcaa2125.html]Hobbistar 60 MKIII [/link] . It gave me a really good idea of how things should go together, so when I built my first kit I wasn't completely clueless.

I have a BUSA Eindecker 90 on the bench right now and it may not be considered a quick build. As long as I'm into RC planes, Ill have a kit on the board but sometimes, I like to try different things.

I was married once.

Personally I love to build and make customizations and lighten things up as much as possible, but time is a big factor for me. I typically don’t even buy arfs there is always a deal on a used plane rtf or rtf less receiver. I have purchased 5 fantastic planes in the last 6 months 3 rtf and 2 needed a receiver only (by the way Futaba needs to work on their 7c receiver prices). Each one for about the cost of the airplane itself Also it doesn’t sting as much if you didn’t build it, should gravity ever win.
