Problems on buddy box with 2.4

I was at the field this morning and one of the instructors was working with a new student. The student was having problems when the instructor would activate the buddy box. He asked me to take the buddy box and see if I could trim it out. Problem was. when I would go to use the ailerons the plance was very slow to respond. He brought the plane and and we checked the control with the buddy box. elevator, throttle and rudder all worked ok. The ailerons would work in very slow motion, almost like it was binding. When the master was used they worked ok. This plane was just changed over to JR 2.4. Did not present that problem with the 72. Any suggestions as to what to look for.

There is no “standard†for implementing a buddy box system so each maufatcerer may implement differently. When you use a buddy box on two Futaba radios, the settings (e.g. trims, servo reversing, dual rates) switch to whatever radio is active. This allows the instructor to have full throws, while the student can be on the dual-rate for example.
I don’t know about JR, but I would look at the expo and DR settings on the student radio. If they are set differently on the student’s radio than the instructor’s, that might be the place to start.

I will forward all of these to the instructor. that way he can look at the slave unit and see what is going on. The master is a 9309? 2.4 the slave is a regular JR 72.

You also need to check and see if the plane is using a servo reversing lead(electrical) for the aler. The Spektrum system 2.4 has a similar problem with that... Just a thought to add to the list.

Not sure I understand what you are saying. When the master tx is being used no problem. Only when it transfers to the slave does the problem present itself.

funny thing about this. I put a 2.4 RX into the club trainer and had a lot of trouble with it. When I give it to the student and the Ail. will work for a few min. and then slow down or quit. But if I take it back I have full control with my X9303 2.4 sys( Slave is a XF421ex 72 band). I have tested this at home and it repeats the problem, the Ail will work for about 5 min. and then fail, for the slave but the master works fine.
I have tried 3 servos into the wing, at present I have a new Hitec servo in the wing ( one serve).
I emailed Horizon about using the 2.4 tx as master with the 72 band tx as slave and they said this is alright. They said to leave the slave tx turned off with the battery in it, and that seems to be right.
Irish said that the 6v batter might run the Ail servo too fast, so I tried it with a 4.8v batter same problem.
At present I am putting the old Futaba trainer system back into the plane and see if that fixs it.

We have a GP Cherokee that exibited the same thing with with ail. only to find out that some 2.4 systems dont like electrical reversing extentions, being used on the Cherokee to pair 2 servo's. The spektrum system wanted two serperate leads
and as much as say so in the manual. The ail. would be erattic on one radio but not the other. So I soldered the wires manualy reversing them and problem solved. Thought maybe just maybe you may have run across the same thing here??
Shooting in the dark but????? it's cheap to cheak.

We did not know the Cherokee was using an old school servo extention Y lead that had a electrical junction it it to reverse the opposite servo, it also had a small screw to allow adjusting the travel, but it was hidden in the wing. When we removed it and I used a Y that I had reversed the wires on the problem was solved...
To make it short The alerons had a reversing Y extention on them and it did not play well with one of the new DX7 but not all the time only when it was paired with certian Futaba radios. It would work for a few minutes then become intermitten..
The new Spektrum radios do not like Electrical reversing Y extention... Thought maybe you may have used one on your trainer and it,s only showing up when paired with a Futaba......

Oh for crap sakes Greg. I was not starting any rumors get off your high horse. I use nothing but Spektrum and have had no problems with it.

I guess we got off on the wrong track.
I only have one servo in the wing with a new Hitec servo and new ext wire and a new 2.4 RX . There is no reversing in the wiring. I did not know we could do that with the wiring.
I just took the 2.4 out of the plane and put the old 72 band back into it. I will get ahold of Horizon and ask them.
But still if anyone has a input I would like to look at it.

P-LINK: In Pilot Link the master transmitter maintains control of all secondary functions (i.e. dual rate, expo, gear, flaps, etc.) and only the primary stick controls (aileron, elevator, rudder and throttle) are transferred to the slave transmitter when the trainer switch is pressed.
That should solve the problem, plus you don't want to worry about trimming the slave.
