Well, the specs say you can use a NiCd or a NiMh pack. Just make sure you use what is applicable to that ESC, that's all. Read the specs.
Features:
BEC: 3A
Constant current 30A Max 40A <10s
Li-Poly 2-3 cells; Ni-MH 4-10 cells Auto Detect
It also says in the beginning that the same NiCd cell pack can be used. 4-10 cells.

You do understand that it won't be the same, right? The Nimh or NiCd will be heavier and likely won't give as much power. That changes the balance of your plane and also the performance.

You may have a hard time finding suitable NiCad packs, and I bet they are more expensive than LiPo's. And, as Jester said, they will be heavier and have less power. I would go with a 1500-2000 mAh 3S lipo. You can get them from Hobby City for $15-20. You could probably find a similar motor and esc there as well.
Good luck

I've never used NiCd or NiMH for electric applications. I've always stuck with LiPo for the very reasons mentioned above. Although they require "special handling", the tend to be more reliable and provide that "instant" power necessary for many electric aircraft applications.
The "C" values (20C for instance) tells you a lot about the battery and what it is capable of. I don't recall seeing that on NiMH nor NiCd battery packs, although it might be there, I've just not seen it because I never looked for it.
I use 1200mah 5 cell NiMH packs on my glow aircraft and get great performance and duration out of them. But, that's glow and not electric.
I would stick with LiPo for electrics only because I prefer them over other battery types for my electrics.

Good morning, Irish.
Yeah, busy as heck. We have a deadline that is somewhat unreasonable, but we're trying to meet it.
And, right in the middle of all this, I went on vacation. I had planned this trip for almost a year so it was set in stone regardless of the deadline.
We took a cruise on Princess (Golden Princess) out of Seattle. Did the Alaska Inland Passage trip, Seattle to Juneau, to Skagway, cruised through the Tracy Arm Fiord to the Glacier, then on to Ketchikan, then to Victoria BC then back to Seattle.
The weather was gorgeous, the ship was great, the food was outstanding, everything was so relaxing. I hated to return on Monday. But, here I am, back at the grind, crunching numbers and writing reports. Yecht!!

Gonna head down for some oatmeal with raisins and browns sugar, an English Muffin, and OJ. Decaf Dunky-Do already disappeared..
Enjoy the flying day!!
