Default Building table

I just picked up two 36"x83" solid core doors , couldnt pass up the price ( free ) . I`m undecided on how to set them up , join end to end , or two seperate tables the same height on both , or one low for chair work , and one for standing . I have a sheet of metal to cover one whole top . Any of your thoughts on how you would set these tables up would be appreciated .

I use a pair of saw horses to support a door as a table.

I built a small clamping system to prevent the movement of the door.

Simple, cheap, and you can tear it down whenever you want easily.

Jeff: I have a one door table. It's great. I covered it with 1/4" sheet cork. I got the cork on-line from a broker. Easy to find if you want to do that. But, it makes a great work table, build table, whatever table. I just place it on top of a pair of the inexpensive composite saw-horses I got from Home Depot. It works great, especially as a build table because with the cork, it makes it easy to pin directly to it. I used contact cement to adhere the cork to the door blank.

If it were me, I would set up for seated with the metal top and use that for framing with magnets and set the other one up for standing. I'm getting a little stiff in the corners and sometimes I just have to stand. Any way you do it, you'll love two tables....you can bounce between jobs as you like without having to store one project to do another.

I also have a door slab that I have put cello-tex over so I can pin on it. but my favorite one for covering is my Ironing Board. I can walk around it, work from the ends. My wife helps me (I probably help her) with the covering. She operates the heat gun while I do the pulling around the wing tips. I put an old towel over the ironing board pad and it gives me a nice cushion so I don't damage the side that I have already covered. It is also at a great height (adjustable) to be comfortable. Try it, you'll like it. Hummmm!!! sounds like a comerical in there somewhere.

I did the same thing. Went to one of the big hardware stores and bought them then cut three of the singles down for sitting and kept the big unit for standing, that's where I have my sander and saw mounted. Makes for great storage.

I like to have two separate tables, one against the wall and one free-standing to give me 180 degree access

That's one slick setup, moondoggie. I like the idea of two sawhorses so you can take it down quickly when needed to be honest though.

I use the 4'x8' outfeed table at my table saw for most building. A seperate 2'x8' table is used for foam cutting and vaccuum bagging.
