Default Revolver maiden

here are some pics of my GP Revolver... I have a Rossi R65 2stroke in there... I had to add 60g on tail to balance... the plane flew awesome... the engine just seems like it has no load on it... it just climbs and climbs... did a couple of high speed passes... it was amazing... I simply love this plane now... the idea was to build it for speed... I would say success was reached... I used a 11x8 prop on there this morning... before hand I actually thought it was too heavy... but it really surprised me... I did need a long landing strip though ... the plane just flies! no slowing down! so speedy landings is the order of the day... but I loved it! tomorrow morning I want to tach the engine on ground... see what kind of RPM's I am getting...

Beautiful plane. Your engine installation looks slick. I like how the head just barely pokes out.

haha... this engine seriously amazed me... its specs suggests 3.5 HP @ 17K RPM, the pipe is a match to the engine also from Rossi (UTSM65)... a friend of mine did the engine installation, he had to drill new mount holes for it to fit 45degrees with the pipe underneath the fuselage... when I tached the engine with the 12x6 I was getting 13.3K RPM on ground... I think I might be reaching close to 15K with the 11x8... I will check in the morning... I wanted to sell this plane a while back before even maiden flight... wanted to go GAS... but this plane aint never getting sold

Sweet airplane isn't it? I absolutely love the Revolvers. They may be one of the best flying sport/performance planes on the market and the price is outstanding. You should try the bigger one at some point too. All the same good points as the smaller one plus a little smoother and slows down fairly well to make nice 3-point landings.

its very well constructed and superb quality... in SA I payed actually an arm and a leg... but could see today that it was worth the money... I bought this one just before the larger one came out... was kinda sad about that... this plane was definitely built for speed... the design and sleekness explains it all... I have to say I was shivering for the first couple of minutes... wasn't expecting that kind of speed... got the adrenalin pumping...

I flew my new Revolver late last week and found the landing gear mounting area weaker than it should have been. I fixed it and reinforced it only to have it act up again on a mildly bumpy landing today. The plane is sleek and is very fast with my OS .61, but I am seriously disappointed in the gear mounting block and surrounding support formers. The wood in my kit seemsvery brittle and I'd say a re-engineered landing gear "box" will toughen it up for me. Right now, it is still one of the best looking planes around and I'm very excited to put it through the inverted low pass!</p>

the landing gear, there is someone on here who posted something on it... I will find it and post it on here... I did the mod and had no troubles with the landing gear... you have to put her down very gently though... haven't yet had a hard landing so she is its ok for now... I have done plenty low passes, still gathering some b.... to go inverted low pass

I had a Ripmax Rapier flying wing. It was a rocket with an OS 50 SX. Very nice flying plane, very responsive and very fast. I learned quickly that I had to make long approaches and judge where I wanted to land it because it doesn't have landing gear..it has a long skid on the bottom. So, you have to set the prop so that it stops on the compression stroke and is horizontal or parallel with the wings. Then, you bring it in, and at about 20 feet, kill the engine and hope your landing was what you intended it to be. Fun..

We clocked it using a police RADAR gun at 121.5 mph and that was with the standard prop. We could get more out of it, but I was satisfied. And, I was very impressed as to how easy it was to fly.. the roll-rate was incredible!!!

I was moving my Venus II last week and accidentally stepped on the vertical Stab and broke the rudder. Very small repair, but really irritated me for being so clumsy... [:@] [&o]

boy can I relate to that. I have the dropsey's lately. This was probably my favorite plane to fly,-stick with 91 4 stroke.

Wow,

Amazing pix, I really like this plane. Rossi is Italian engine if I'm correct? What flying skills of pilot does this plane require?

He wants to fly it very fast. That requires more than "second plane" experience, I'd say.

The Revolver isn't difficult to fly at all, once it is in the air. If you can handle a sport/aerobatic plane, pattern plane or warbird, then the Revolver is perfect for you. It is sleek and fast but engine choice, prop selection and throttle management can help with that if it isn't what you are looking for. The problem comes when it is time to land. The plane just does not like to slow down. You really have to set up your landings just right. This is what gives most Revolver owners fits, myself included at first. It is a great design though and you can bring it in for 3-point landings at a fairly high angle of attack without stalling which can help slow it.

If you are thinking about one, I would seriously consider the larger, 70" version. It is still sleek, fast if you want it to be, extremely stable, very precise and very maneuverable. Being larger it just seems to maneuver a little more gracefully though which can make it more relaxing to fly. It also slows down much better than the smaller one. I think it just has to do with the larger size and thicker wing.

Some of us on RCU are even trying to convince Great Planes to build a giant scale version of the Revolver: http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_95...tm.htm#9593323

All that being said, this is a beginners forum. So if there are any complete beginners reading this, don't even think about either Revolver until you've gotten past a good trainer and sport/aerobatic airplane. Then definitely get one and have a blast with it.

Its Italian yes... Rossi's are the Ferraris of the SKY ... you dont require great skill levels to fly the plane... but you do need to know how to land softly... if you cant then you will break the gear off all the time... so I would say your landing skills must be good only... and be prepared to come in fast all the time... it doesnt slow down...

Switch,

Though I'm flying for the last 5 years but no matter what I always take people's experiences into consideration, because it's all about learning and all your life you learn. Well as you said about those NovaRossi engines of course they are Italian flying Ferraris Someday I'm gonna buy me the Revolver and NovaRossi.

Thanks for your advice and it's been duly noted

Mody

armody: thanks man... just take note... the AXE Rossi R65 which I have in there wont fit the standard firewall mounting holes... you can see this one is at an angle... we had to drill new holes to mount it... the thing I like about these engines, they have twice the HP of any other engines in the same size category... this seems to show when one flies... the engine has endless power and never seems to lose any either... but also could be that its being overpowered, the plane now that is... it only needs a 55AX... but I like the sound with that pipe also... all and all I think anyone would enjoy this plane, no matter what engine is in there even, but I wanted mine to be faster than normal so I opted with Rossi...

HI Guys,
I got the landing gear issue solved...I built a new former (baltic birch ply) just behind the main gear mounting point and made sure to epoxy it properly with 30 minute mix. Then I drove #4 by 1/2" screws through the gear mounting plate into the new former's gusset (also made of avery solid 1/2" x 1/2" block ofbirch ply). After a day of curing, it's solid as a rock.
Flew three great flights today and greased in some nice smooth landings, but everything held up great.
It's not a beginner's plane, and it's not a second plane either...so, maybe we should move this topic over to speed planes and sport flying...
thanks,
jw

I seriously bought the last one in stock in SA man... I phoned everywhere... finally got hold of Southern Hobbies... they had one left... I am not sure if they have more or are importing some more as Great Plane models don't come cheap... you can phone them if you like, there is now a bigger size one available also... I payed R3200 to get it delivered to my doorstep... but I see you live in Wellington... Southern Hobbies are in the Western Cape... 021 761 6848... the price was R2900... the rest was for delivery... that is the price for the ARF kit only offcourse...

ok so this morning I had the GPS on it... it was doing 115mph... I am still at rich setting, the plane is smothered in oil... I don't have a cowl on there currently... so once I lean a bit and buy me a new cowling I reckon I can push it past 120 easily... but it coasts so nicely through the air... very awesome plane, both looks and speed...

Had another two great flights on the revolver on Tuesday...
It flies great and fast on my OS .61...most of the time at half throttle.
To chop the speed down I've learned to do the crosswind leg at almost no throttle...feather in a little more for the upwind leg and stay on the throttle if you find it ballooning on the landing approach.
It's almost like you have to fly it in, vs. the standard controlled stall of other planes...

As for the performance...wow...
The prop line is right down the middle of the fuse, so it rolls like a pattern plane.
This is a very fun plane and now that I have the landing gear assembly properly secured, glued and screwed, I can have fun learning what it and it's pilot can do...

Great plane, great looks.
