Default Fox .50 (gas) For a LT40 ?

What do you guys think? My dad has a Lt 40 with an OS46fxi on it. We are looking to get away from nitro. How do you guys think the 50 will do on it? Any one seen one running or have one?

8, what's required to change over these small glow engines to gas. I have never done it or seen it done. I have seen a few of the diesel conversions that work very well.

Check out the newest from Magnum. The XLS52, gas engine. Not 52cc but, .52 ci!!!!! Should be available later this summer. Price $199.

I saw this while covering Toledo last month. Very cool.Onlya couple of downsidesicould to it is that it's got an electronic ignition that you have to find a place to mount, and while it will swing a bigger prop than it's 40-55 glow counterparts you're going to have a hard time with larger propellers on a 40-ish size plane. But the "cool factor"of giving up glow on a 40 size plane just makes it something that IHAVEto try!!!!!

It is marginal to even have a 11" prop on a LT-40 without changing the gear/wheels

Don't forget the ignition battery that has to be in the tank compartment

You can get by with a 6 oz gasoline tank though.

What is the noise level like for a small gas engine? The gassers at my field are all really loud, but they are much larger.

The gas combustion itself is a little softer than glow.

So on a .50 c.i. engine expect it to be slightly quieter than a .50 glow engine

Most of those big gassers have no muffler at all. It is just a exhaust deflector

The LT40 that we are looking at putting this on has an 11-6 prop on it now and it clears fine, never had a prop stike. but we are thinking about making it a tail dragger if he put this engine on it.

Main gear is from H9 Big Stick 60 available from Horizon. The gear is located right behind F2.
Tail wheel is Dubro and the tail wheel wire is stuck into the rudder
Ultimate of simplicity and works beautifully at the field
Also now have bolt on wings and run a 12-6 prop on a OS 52 Four stroke engine

This is more w8ye's territory than it is mine, but I would guess it would take at least a .50 gas engine to equal a .40 glow engine...I just finished converting a small gas 2stroke over to glow/gas mix and so far since I have no where to mount it yet, all I have gotten is a "thuka" out of it...a lot of the small gassers will also gut the muffler for power, hence the noise issue....I think the .50 gas is a neat idea and being done because it can be,,but I dont think it will go over well once tested, fuel will be less $,add ons will be more weight...just my opinion... and dont count me out, I may end up with one myself one day.....the above link is the opposite of this thread, but of conversions in general.......Rog

Ken, can't wait to see one. Still waiting to see someone with the Saito gasser but I'm pretty sure the price is keeping people away. $200.00 isn't all that high for a good running little glow engine so I hope to see this one in use. At the price of glow fuel now days I can see these small gassers catching on. I have a couple of Hobby People stores in my area so I'm pretty sure I will see a few of these when they hit the market. Very cool!!!! Is that carb a pumper like other gas engines or does it require tank pressure like a glow engine??

Here's the Fox .50: http://www.foxmanufacturing.com/inde...oducts_id=1519

I am interested in the concept. I would think that something more appropriate for a .60 size airplane would be better though since those airframes generally have more room and maybe deal with a little added weight better. Who know'd though, maybe these little .50'ish engines will work out well in .40 size airplanes.

I'm really curious about the OS 55cc gasser. I'd like to get my hands on one soon. If they took that concept and scaled it down to something appropriate for smaller airplanes too, it might be nice.

I've seen mixed reviews on the Saito gassers. A few people on here seem to love them but the people who I've met in person that own them say that they are very disappointed and frustrated. Not sure what the truth is. I guess I'd have to try one myself to really find out.

That HP web site still has that item listed on BACKORDER

Could be that the very old trick of RC suppliers just may be well and alive. That is, get enough backorders and money, then we will obtain, manufacture, import, whatever, the item.

Back in the '70s when I owned a Hobby Shop in Mt. Prospect, IL, Carl Goldberg and Top Flite, then separate companies in the Chicago area, did that with most each new item. Once they had enough orders for the item to finance the production, then and only then did they produce the item. LHS's customers came in for 3 months wondering why the LHS did NOT have the item as it had been advertised for 3-6 months in the magazines. (Not much real big mail order and no computers back then.)
Still should work today.

Hoss,
While the website does say "Backordered" I know this item hasn't been released for sale yet. Talking with Mike Greenshields at the Toledo Show he indicated it would be Summer before the item was available for sale here in the US.

Yep, that's the way they do it, or at least one of the ways. SOSDD.
