Hi, I'm Marc, a 33 yr old code chopper (programmer) who has been in the hobby about 4 months. Originally got hooked by a family member years ago and my wife bought me an electric cheapy in July. Couldn't keep it in the air more than 30 seconds but it made me start checking out glow's. Started my PT-40 kit in August, been flying it now about 1.5 months. I have yet to have to ask a question here because everytime I had one, it was already answered :D. The PT-40 has been great, only killed 4 props so far (2 yesterday [&o])

Managed to get hooked up with a good instructor and what seems so far to be a good club. Minnflyer had said just show up and you will have to beat off the helpers, that is so true. First day out as soon as the engine started I had three guys help adjust the needles to get the idle, etc right on.. I never would have gotten it right without them!

Zimbo,
It appears to be. I opened the box over the weekend and am just getting started on it. As far as the revues that I have read on it state, it should be a really nice ship. Give me a few months and I will give you a better report.

The GP Mustang is FABULOUS, and a 70 4-stroke would be the perfect compliment.

Thanks harper,
I can't wait for that flight report. Meanwhile I have still got to solo!

Might as well throw my name into the hat. I'm Phil from Winnipeg Canada. I'm 40-something and just getting started in RC although I have been building things (balsa plane kits, scratchbuilt boats, ships in bottles, furniture, house walls) ever since I was a kid. I have dreamed of RC flying since I was a kid too, and a month or so ago I suddenly woke up and realized - "hey, I'm a grown-up now. I have an income, a family, and a roof over my head. If I want to have an RC plane, I can just go ahead and do it!"

Don't have a plane yet, but I will be buying a SIG Kadet LT-40 kit in the next month or so. I have a brand-new in box Royal 0.46 to go in it, and I'm going to use a Futaba 6EXA system to talk to it.

I've met some really nice people at a local club and I will be taking lessons in the spring to learn how to fly my baby. Then I am going to start building scale planes.

My name is Mike. I'm 24 and a Field Engineer for a large defense contractor. Before that I spent 5 years active duty in the Marines as an avionics technician. I've been interested in r/c flying for as long as I can remember but never really did anything about it until recently. My fiance's grandfather has been building and flying for decades but lost partial use of his hand due to a stroke amongst other problems. So he gave me an unbuilt kit he had in his basement as well as a bunch of parts, tools etc. The kit is a Modeltech Cap 21, still in early stages. Realizing that it will probably take me until atleast spring to build it and that it's far from ideal to learn to fly on I bought a trainer and all the goodies to go along with it. Trainer is built and I started the engine the other day (my first time starting a glow engine). Needs some tuning but it's about ready to fly. Got my AMA license and went to one club meeting but still haven't flown. Hard to find time because I work full time including traveling all over the world 1-2 weeks out of the month and on top of that working on my electrical engineering degree. If the weather cooperates, Thanksgiving weekend may be the perfect time to make my first flight or hopefully flights. Really enjoying reading everyone else's story here!

Hi all,

My name is Saïd, I'm 34ish, and I just got into the hobby with an Aerobird Challenger two days ago. I managed to get it into the air on my first flight, and also managed to watch it fly off into the distance on the same flight [:-]

I will likely pick up a replacement fuselage on the next good looking flying day to try again. A friend who flies has also recomended I try the NexSTAR Select, so I might try that one come spring time.

Oh yes, I'm located in Loudoun County, Virginia, and I very much look forward to finding out all kinds of neat stuff from RC Universe. :)

Hello folks, my name is Bill I'm 41 and a helicopter mechanic by trade, been doing that for close to 20 years. I flew some RC several years ago but got out of it when I started traveling too much. Now I've settled down, found a good local RC club and I'm building a Great Planes PT40. I should have it done in a few weeks and I'll take it out to the club for some dual control training to refresh my flying skills. I'm looking forward to flying again. For my second plane I plan to go with something big. I have a converted gas engine and I'd like to put it in a Champ or Taylorcraft simi scale.

I'm Scott in sunny Gilbert AZ where we fly all year (if you don't mind sweating at 9:00 AM in summer). I own a landscaping company and am having a wonderful time in RC. Good to see many youngsters in this forum(I'm 45). Not many teens at my field....

Hi All,

I am 32, an IT Manager, live in Richmond, VA, and am brand spankin' new to the hobby. Just bought and assembled the NexStar, and have spent many nights crashing my plane on the simulator. Trying to get someone from the local club to return my emails so I can find an instructor to get me flying. [:o]

Looking forward to learning and flying....:D

Hi, my name is Douglas,
I've been flying RC models for about 27 to 28 years. Joined RC Airport a while back and started looking at these threads recently. After the merge. Very intersting questions and answers are continually coming up. I Like helping the new guys. I'm not an expert, but I'll lend an ear and maybe have an recommendation or two. I'm retired AF Jet engine Mechanic twenty years. but for the last ten years I've worked as a copier tech and anything else I can find work at.
I Like reading the Scale and Warbird threads as well. Nice to meet everyone!!!![&:]

Hello everyone. My name is James and I live in Marietta, Ga - just moved here. I'm new to the hobby also. I recenty lost a pt40 and new engine to a crash. I still haven't figured that one out yet (no I didn't go it alone). I don't post that much, but I'm on here often. I've learned more here by just searching the forums than I have anywhere. It's like a library. I'm really impressed with this site.

Hello all,
My name is Nathan. I am from the Dallas area in Texas. I am just getting into flying after watching all my life and not being able to afford a pilot's license or plane. I have been around R/C since I was little, running cars and my dad flew when I was a kid. We both are getting into it again. I have built my first plane and I am about to start to learn to take off and land. I have been coming here and reading the posts and have gotten some real good info. Thanks to everyone who is willing to help!

I am looking for some answers on how to get into RC Airplane flying? I am looking to purchase an airplane for my father for Christmas this year. I have many local opinions on what is a good airplane to get started with. suggestions were for the Great Planes PT 40 Mark II with the O.S. LA 40 Engine. What do you think?

RE: Let's meet the new guys!

Greetings from Easley, South Carolina my name is Tommy and I have been in RC Airplanes for the last 18 years and I have been teaching new pilots to fly for the last 15 years.

I am a Nuclear I & C technician for a local power company.

Since I have learned how to fly and achieved SOLO status my ambition has been teaching new pilots how to fly. I want to put back into our sport what was given to me and that is doing whatever it takes to assist or make better the learning curve that is given to new pilots.

I started out in this hobby with a .20 basic trainer and attempted to fly it alone before I was ready, 1st mistake of many to come. That is why my ambition towards teaching others so that they do not have to face what I did alone and not knowing before they were ready.

I found a friend that was interested in trying it alone and between us we managed to rekit many airplanes before I got tired of reassembling pieces of broken airplanes.

I finally gave in and joined a club for instruction and after a few days of having someone standing by my side and teaching me I was able to earn my SOLO status.

The club that I belonged to did not have any written documentation for flight training so this is where I started my quest.

I helped put together all documentation for the clubs Rules and Regs and followed thru assembing our Flight Training manual so that anyone that came into the club would have one document describing what our club was about.

I started taking on assisting new pilots in learning how to fly although I was nervious at first I come to realize as each pilot learned a new skill I felt the same responses that I encountered when I achieve them when I was learning.

You talk about giving a gift that has rewards or a feeling of satisfaction this is where it's at :-).

I am planning to building a Flight School in my back yard so that I may continue this quest.

If at any time you have questions for me please feel free to send me an email, I am not an expert by any strech of the emagination but the fire that I feel from helping others carrys my ambition and I will gladly share so that others don't have to suffer the consequences of going it alone.
