Default Dif Grease

I have recently installed the front one-way and the hardened steel spur gears in my FF. Before I can reinstall and start the car I must re-grease the diffs but the Cen diff grease #G70101 is proving very hard to get hold of over here. Is there any other type that anyone can recommend that may be easier to track down? Thanks.

A silicone or lithium based automotive type grease will work

yep - lithium grease etc - it doesnt have to be exotic stuff, just something nice and sticky to keep some on the gears at *$%!! rpm...

i filled the holes in my diffs and filled em up with general purpose grease that i use on the 1:1 cars wheel bearings!! dunno how it handles yet.... it has stiffened the diffs up a fair bit tho!.....and added a ton of weight to the drivetrain.

We use our CEN2000 grease in all of our race MT2, ST2, and ATX. IT works the best after we tested several different brand and weights. CEN2000 is about 300000wts

I packed my diifs with white lithium grease on my MT2. It really stiffened the diff and made the gears run more smoothly. But, I soon realized the heat from friction liquified the grease enough to throw grease out of the bearings onto my diff cups. Not good because dirt will now collect there and could damage the bearings. Also the grease adds unwanted weight. Im thinking of a new modification using graphite because its light and has incredible lubricating values. I need to seal the bearings better. Thinking of using o-rings possibly and making boots out of heat shrink tubing. Does anyone have any ideas?

Let us know how that goes mate, my diffs dont seem to run that smooth so any tips would be gratefully received.

Mine gears werent very smooth either even new. I may be wrong but the seem to have too much backlash out of the factory. That may be why some people have had problems. Mine seemed like the gears were barely contacting and there doesnt seem to be any wear. Im going to shim them alittle tighter and see what happens. Need to be carefull as too tight will knife edge the gears.

I may have mistated what I meant about the gear mesh. I mean the mesh betwwen the bevel and pinion gears. The mesh is loose and I will adjust. As far as the part with spider gears. This is where the gear action seems rough. It seems the cen grease is so sticky it wont let the gears move freely and smooth. The housing is easily sealabe(keep in mind I have an mt2, dont know if it makes a difference). Any Im going to experiment with some thinner fluids. In the mean time I installed a one way diff to test. I am still going to try graphite in the outer housing with the bevel and pinion. Il post the results.

taylormade...let me know also how you make out with the diff fluids... I have way too many projects at the same time.. I have beenwanting to seal up the diffs and try something lighter to see if they work better... just haven't been able to start that one... also, I race the truck every week so I can't lay it up for long... Yes, I use it all winter.....

Filled the outer housing with graphite(the front one with the one way in it). It works great! Stiffened the gears nicely compared to the lithium greas which I felt stiffened too much. The gear action Is very smooth and consistent. Just what I was looking for. I was worried the graphite wouldnt cushion the mesh like grease will but it is quite the oppisite. The graphite seemed to pack into the crevises like the gears werent even touching each other. I had planned on sealing the outer housing using o-rings what have you but decided to test first. I didnt lose any graphite through the bearings but lost a liitle where the housing meets the chassis. My chassis is a little bent in that location(hit a tele pole a couple days after i got the truck). I plan to straighten the chassis alittle and use a bead of black rtv where the housing mounts to the chassis. I must warn you I made a hell of a mess with the graphite.

sounds like it may work.... My diffs make so much noise it sounds like something is broken.... never have any problems... every time I repack the diffs they are quiet for a few runs then the noise comes back... I'll try the graphite... hope it stays in... I don't mind the noise, just tired of answering questions about the drive train noise from other racers... Before I kick their butts......

Had a problem with the graphite packed diffs today. I pulled the whole assembly off so I could seal the opening where it meets the chassis. I ran out of graphite the first time so I wasnt able to fill it all the way. I went and purchased more. Of course I dropped the assembly and most of the graphite fell out. I commensed to refill and noticed the graphite was coal black instead of the shiny silvery kind. Plus it seemed much more dry. I checked the new and old labels and they are identical. Anyway I started to refill and the new stuff packed the diff so tight I could barely move it and the gearing was very rough. I think maybe they changed the formulation. I also loosened my mesh to seeif that would help. It didnt. I am baffled. Just to play it safe I bought a third bottle and it was also the coal black kind. Im totally baffled. This was an extremely messy experiment and would only reccomend using graphite if it is the silvery kind. I was tickled pink by my initial results. This sucks, back to square one. Maybe I should just follow cen's recomendation for cen 2000.

as much as i don't want to .... I'm going to re-shim the diffs again and see what happens... I'll continue to use the grease that I've been using... associated diff grease... Keep me posted
