FunFactor not selecting 2nd gear

You can adjust the time the car will change to 2nd gear..
On the clutch, there is a 1.5mm grub screw which is accessable when all bolted onto the car, just turn the small spur gear round. the standard setting for this is to fully screw un and then 4 turns out according to the Cen handbook.

I think my gears are fine, I noticed that there is not very much compression in my engine. What places to I look and am I correct in blaming this lack of compression for my possible engine issues? When it is quiet, i can turn the engine over and I hear what sounds like air coming from the screw at the end of the clutch bell. I will be taking the engine apart, but just looking for advice if someone has dealt with this before.
