Coming together nicely Brian. Once your wing is "squared out", she will have the right graceful proportions. Good call on the canopy - smooth is beautiful (lest it be a warbird).
If I may make a suggestion, take a couple of pieces of small tape and put them on the exhaust and carb inlet on your engine after you blow it off. They don't keep dust off your engine but at least they keep it out of the engine.
Of course, it pays to give the engine a good rinse prior to operation anyway but balsa dust is not friendly to carburetor ports.

I feel stupid about the engine. I normally button it up to keep the garbage out. I'm hoping everything will still be fine.

The long answer...
There are places in the fuse that got a bit thin. I am starting to think I may need to fiberglass regardless.
Honestly, I was hoping to get it airborne soon- This is going slower than anticipated- so I was seriously reconsidering. After inspecting the fuse to the light, I don't know if I trust just monokote.
So... yes. I'll be shooting paint on it. If I get a bit heavy for my first try, I don't think this airplane will suffer too much. If I have to, I'll throw the tuned pipe on it.
Trying to do it right takes time. But I think I'll be happier with the results by doing it right... (At least that is what I keep trying to convince myself late at night when it is keeping me awake!)
At least I don't obsess over things too much...
I am looking forward to copying your retract install on the SK though!

I seem to be locked at the moment. Unable to decide the best way to install the dowels into the wing. Had I left the bulkhead ply, it would have been easier to make adjusments. I need to get the angle of attack right.

No pics yet, but trudging along slowly. I have set the dowels and am squaring the wing.
I just wanted to comment on an exchange between Doxilia and Dave Anderson here as I thought it would take away from Dave's post. He had a gorgeous Kaos that he finished up... Bravo!
Doxilia mentioned the aesthetics of the tail differences. He addressed the differences between the Kaos and the Super Kaos. He pretty much hit it on the nail, except I believe Joe meant to design this airplane with the use of retracts to compete against other aircraft of the day. It is different than the Kaos, and I am eager to feel the difference some day.
Regarding the tail of the 2 airplanes, as I do agree the look of the tail on the Kaos is more aesthetically pleasing than it's younger brother, but I see the 2 as completely different airplanes with familiar outlines. The tail of the Super Kaos excites me just as much because it is set up like the Cap 232. The authority and meat in the rudder working behind the elevator altogether is a different concept than the original Kaos. (obviously) I have always thought the advantages the Cap had over the Extras was in this design. I do not know off hand if this design was common in the early 1970's, but I do think it was/still is brilliant, none-the-less.
I am VERY eager to put mine in the air. I need more than 24 hours in a day to accomplish that right now. But it is moving forward very slowly... forward movement is good!

Time and money are dictating the use of Monokote.
Oh well... I will still be happy.
I can get back to working on it again. I hope to finish it in a couple weeks.
I'd love to fly some along side Jeff's new Sun Fli 5! AMAZING airplane. Nice work sir.

Sorry for all talk and no pictures....
Life has gotten in the way of this build (actually the weather- all summer), as well as training my daughter to fly. This has eaten a lot of my time. Now I am back on it... again... and have decided to pitch the mechanicals for the pneumatic retracts. I have been waiting all summer to fly this, now I am impatient!!! The pneumatics are a lot easier to install and quicker too. I had to patch up my wing where I ripped it up for the mechanicals. All good now. The top center has been fiberglassed and the bottom is ready to be buttoned up and glassed as well.
Pictures to soon follow, but not today. Pulling a 12 hour shift at work starting in 1 hour.
Until then...

Hey Brian,
Don't dispare about taking longer than you wanted to to finish your SK. Just remember an old saying my late mother always used to tell me, which was "When you get bogged down on a project, don't sit back and worry about how much more work you have to do. Sit back and enjoy how much work you've already done" You're doing an admirable job, keep up the great work and you'll be enjoying flying it with your daughter before you know it...................

YAY! Pictures!!!
I think I will order the Jett Tuned Muffler.
Total weight with all on board equipment stuffed inside is still only 5.8lbs. With that information, I will follow Mike's (8178) lead by monokoting the wing and horizontal. I will order matching paint from Radio South. I will be using the Deft Laquer Sanding Sealer, and hopfully I can find some .5oz glass cloth over the .75 oz. I'll use it if I have to though...
Currently looking for 2 1/4" chromed Dubro wheels. Wish me luck.

I hope the scheme will be cool. I'm torn between an original reproduction and a late 80's to mid 90's type of scheme with some pink, light and dark blue, and white.
Opinions on this?
I have learned A LOT with this build. about to learn some more too...

I have found my scheme!!! It is one step later in vintage, but not the original colors. Think Tweedy Bird plans...
Some will recognize it right away... some will not. We'll have to wait and see. I'll be spending a small fotune at Radio South to get the appropriate matching colors though.
It is just a S Kaos. Yes it is. And that is why I want it. It may never be perfect in every maneuver, but it won't need to apologize for that either. I am getting excited hoping to see it in the air by the end of this flying season. The fall weather ought cooperate a little better with paint application as well.
The other tremendous news... I may have 3 others joining in to start a CPA chapter in the upper midwest. It all starts with a few, and will add up quickly.
Anyone in MN, WI, IA, ND, SD, and my Canadian neighbors.... We should talk!!! I think we can make something happen.
