ET Pilot, Next time you required to enlarge balsa sheet, bear in mind the stress will work in your joint, the better to do is to make some cuts in zigzag or diagonal also I use carpenters white or yellow glue, glue it over the night in a flat surface. That is the way I do.

Vertical grimace when you start your build post your progress here. This will be my first Kaos hope it flies well. This is a freestyle build so not a pure Kaos although I use the Killer plan most. I've been debating on canopy choice; Killer Kaos or Kaos - 90. Not sure with which to go.
Alberto, your way is the correct way. I did give it some thought. Decided on a butt joint for 3 reasons. One, easy to do. Two, the area will get a glued-in filler block for the wing bolts. Three, it will all be wrapped in fiberglass. So the joint should be ok. Any other location and your way is the way to go. Thanks.
Skyhawk wild hog is very tasty. It has to be thoroughly cooked. Some people just stay away from wild hog. Last year I trapped 9. For 2018 I have one on the count meter. My worst year I trapped like 21 or 28 can't really recall. Sold most of them.
My plan for now is to work on the build a short time in the morning. Then get on with the day's work. I do have a lot to do. I have the jig set and one spar in the RIGHT wing. LOL. This is just like the left wing. So I'll be back with anything different or when I start on the fuselage again.

ETpilot,
I was out of the hobby for 17 years with everything sold. I started back 1.5 years ago. Built a PT40 to relearn, soloed it after 4 instructor flights, and been soloing since. Building a 60 sized Ugly Stik now, going to power it with an OS 91FS Surpass II /pump! And I also was able to purchase 4 Kaos Kits!! LOL Two 60s and 2 40s. My 2 absolutely favorite planes from the 90s when I was really into the hobby. Got all the Kaos planes because I want to power the 60s, one with a 2 stroke and one with a 4 stroke, I have a Saito 100 GK. And I had purchased some OS 46 engines I needed airplanes for and so I bought the Kaos 40s when I saw them. I think like you. I don't like the stock canopy and I will probably get different ones. I will probably leave one of each size with stock landing gear etc, and the other I will use retracts, maybe tuned pipe or a Dub Jett tuned muffler.. Looking forward to those builds!!

Welcome kablake, I, like you, had a lapse in the hobby from the 70’s-80’s to 2014. I found so much had changed. Been busy building airplanes. I have a few to maiden. You have been busy in 1.5 yrs. When you get to work on your Kaos models post your progress here. There is a lot of interest in this KAOS thread. I've never done a retract model. I may have to give that a try.

Lesson learned!! Don't build a 36” tapered wing using 36” balsa stock. It falls a bit short. LOL. 35” OK. Minor fixes not to be seen. I put the wing halves together to see how they look. Not too bad.
I weighed the wings, fuselage sides and tail feathers. I'm up to 2.9 pounds so far. Slowly moving along.

Here is a photo of my Kaos 60. Taken around 1995. It is powered by a Fox Eagle IV 74. I bought several of these engines I am in the process of rebuilding and I want to build one Identical to the one in the photo.

Kablake that is a good looking airplane. Good luck on the next one.
This wing will be joined upside down. Here it is flat on the deck looking at the bottom. I got the root ribs joined together well but with a slight gap at the LE. I had to pull the right root rib to glue to the LE. I knew I would have a gap. I still need to sand more on the spar ends so the gap will narrow a bit more. So I will add a filler bock. The area will be drilled for the wood hold down dowel which will be epoxied in. The area is also reinforced with ¼” plywood either side of the ribs. It will all be covered with fiberglass. Should be strong enough.

Thanks ETpilot..
I can see as USUAL, you have to do some sort of fix when you build an airplane. I always do!! When I started on the 2nd wing of the Stik I started on another right wing!!! Fortunately I didn't go too far and wasn't that hard to fix. And when I drilled the holes for the rear of the wing to mount to the fuse I drilled them straight down. But NOT at 90 degrees to the wing surface. So I had to make some wooden washers that had the correct angle to make the head of the bolt surface flat with the surface. These "washers" glued to a piece of thin plywood they had on the plans to add a bit of strength to the rear of the wing. Ahh what fun!!

Yes, things happen. Mine wouldn't have been a problem had I built a 35" wing. BUT........ Learning to fix things is part of the hobby. It is fun learning. I built a SPAD airplane with the wing held by rubber bands. I don't like rubber bands so after flying it a while I modified it. I used 4 bolts and I, too, had to make special washers as you describe. Works great.

I sanded the ends of the spars a bit more. Then assembled the wing as if it were to be joined. I placed a scale along the spar to make sure wing was straight. I checked the gap and found it to be a tight 1/16”. So not too bad. I'll add a filler piece to take up the space. I planed some pigtails getting the LE's ready for final sanding. That pile of shavings is from just one wing. I used the shavings to relight my wood stove. Cold day today. Now rainy and cold.

Checking the left wing against the wing saddle. I gave myself about a ⅜” leeway in case I had to move wing forward or rearward. Looks pretty good if the incidence is correct.

Progress is a little slow. I have the wing halves almost completed. LE shaped and sanded. They may need a bit more sanding. Wing tip installed, more work on that. Filler block for the wing bolt area installed. . Aileron cut and hinge positions determined. Hope to have the wings joined soon.

Wing coming along well. After I do the hinging I'll add tips to the ailerons and allow for proper spacing. Working on right wing. I need to move this build along. Temperatures are getting warmer and I have some good outside projects to work on. One biggie is a few welding projects.

Looking good.
I am finishing up a big repair on a competition scale model, and then I will get my Killer Kaos rolling. My plan is to use a sheeted foam wing, which I will vacuum bag with 1.5 mm poplar skins. This has worked very well on other projects. I plan to add retracts, so some planning will be needed before the wing can be sheeted, as I want to install the gear rails and some reinforcements before the cores are sheeted. Retracts in foam wings can be a little tricky.
I acquired an OS .70 Surpass from an estate a couple months back, so I plan to use that. 4-strokes are great. Otherwise I would have used a new .65 AX. Another great engine. I did pick up an engine mount, and a few sticks of wood yesterday, so I am acquiring all of the parts I will need.

Vertical grimmace it sounds like you will have a good Kaos build going. Post pictures as you progress. I've never done retracts nor a foam wing so that would be an interest of mine. It is always good to start a new build. It will be a rainy weekend here so I will have time for airplane work. I have to get this one built as outside work will start to pile up.
Here is my power supply. Not sure how it will work out. But I will find out. It still needs a run in on my engine stand.

Would be very interested in seeing how you do the retracts in a foam wing. I did my first foam wing and really liked the way it worked out. I think it was a lot less work than a builtup wing. So far the landing gear blocks have held up well.

VG. The engine is an OS GGT15 gas engine. It is equivalent to a .90ci. New, never been run. It will be interesting to see how it performs. I have a GGT10 that I put on the stand. It ran at a high idle. Put fuel thru it until the idle came down some and stabilized. I have it on a plane now and I need to do some taxi tests with it.
I made some progress this weekend. I hinged the ailerons and need to finish them, worked in the wingtips, firewall and engine mount and started back up on the fuselage. Still much to do but moving along.

I think one of the keys is to put the rails in the foam core before it is sheeted. Along with making the block rails a little longer, I will add some ply cross braces as well I think. Then some good fiberglassing over the area. But with all of this, positioning this stuff properly will be important, so measuring accurately will be critical.

Always measure twice before you cut yourself! Going to build a 45 inch hot wire cutter or maybe an adjustable length. I'm in the plastic bottle trade and we use a hot wire to cut the bottles to weigh the different sections.
