Default Tiporare Anyone?

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...MESE:IT&ih=003

This kit was produced from the late 1980's through the early 1990's.

Designed by Dick Hanson, The Tiporare design was based on the Hanno Prettner Curare.

Mr. Hanson slightly enlarged the Curare design, removed the flaps and simplified construction.

This resulted in a cleaner and lighter airframe. The Tipo was a very competitive pattern ship.

Dave Brown flew this design to many victories in competition!

Wingspan: 65 Inch.

Wing Area; 720 Sq. In.

Recomended Engine: .60 2-Stroke (My suggestion for the best performance: .91 4-Stroke)

This was one of the last of the ballistic pattern aircraft designed. It was the end of an era!

This kit is new in the box. But, the fuselage was damaged by being packaged too tightly.

The good news is that I am a certified full scale aircraft mechanic and a composites technician!

I have repaired the damage using West Systems Epoxy and glass cloth. The repairs require finish sanding.

I garantee the fuselage is as straight as an arrow, and good as new.

I will double box the kit for shipping. The kit measures 58"x18"x8" That makes it an oversize 2 box.

FPA,
I think you were fair and hopefully someone who really wanted one was able to afford it.
I respect you for that.

I can't conceive of this plane with a 4-stroke, either. Aren't there certain laws of nature that should never be broken?

Having said that, you gave some lucky person a very good deal. I hope they do build and fly it. It would be such a sad shame for it to be reduced to nothing more than part of some useless "kit collection."

Hahhahhaa!!! Yessss............. A nice quiet 4 stroke A superchaged YS would do nicely. My old GP Lancair with a Saito 100 went through the speed trap at 157 MPH (Right before the wing fluttered and broke in two[:@]) So, YES! A 4 stroke is superior to your whining (or screaming, as you might call it) 2 stroke antique engines[X(] Too bad the fuselage is so small, not enough room for batteries

Tail dragger??? Nah, I couldn't bring myself to do that

not saying the 4C engine is not powerful.... Just fine in an LA2 or T2A-Mk-4 - or one of the mutant daddy rabbits in SPA

Just that 4C does not "belong" in a Tipo
I flew 3 Tipo aircraft competitively ... one original 720 and two 750 size
None YS powered.
Today, there are superior 2c powerplants to anything I flew back in the 80s.

I'd imagine a YS63 might fit, probably adequate power. Maybe a YS110.

Quiet impressive .... 157mph lancair --- some serious muscle in the saito 100.

I was running an APC 12.5x11, trimmed to 12x11. The Lancair tooks gobs of runway to get moving! Once it was airborne though.... Woo hoo!!!! That was one fast plane. I guess I should have removed the covering from the wings and glassed the inner 2/3 of them. Oh well... Live and learn

Wow, you did pretty well on that auction. I bought one a few months ago for about that, built/ready to fly, YS .61 long stroke with Hatori pipe, and a set of Rhom air retracts installed. My sister has some video she took of me flying it up on youtube.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FP4J0HQBtao Fun plane!

Tommygun, I thought ballistic pattern planes were supposed to be flown fast.[X(]

I think it is time we old timers formed a hit squad and sent them to these four-stroke fellers flying field. We should all be armed with water pistols loaded with deer scent. What say? <G>

Ed Cregger

P.S. I got smart and sold off my four-strokes that were targeted for the SPA and instead bought some old two-strokes that "belong" in those old models.

Now that's enough heresy around here! (I'm joking - yeah, seems obvious, but some folks are a little slooooooooow. Now that I think of it, that might include me too, these days).

Tommygun, I was being sarcastic. Honestly, I thought I saw smoke on the runway.

This fourstroke thing in 10cc pattern ships remends me of when Carrol Shelby went to Chrysler. We know of the stuff he did at Ford; Dodge had the four banger thing called the Omni and it was just that, a grocery getter. He did some suspension and turbocharging mods and did a comparison at I think Willow Springs with it versus the Mustang GT 350 which was one of his older creations. The little car that could did but for us hot rodders this was anethema because the Omni really did beat the much older '66 Mustang. It didn't look right, a real live muscle car being blown off by a smogged up four door granny car, but we got used to it. I would think an OS 91 pumped would just about drop in my Hanson Tipo but I will tell you the purist in me says go for the rear exhaust 60, it was made for it. Any gripes at my field and I will run an unmuffled pipe at that.

There's a big jump in cubic inches from a 60 to a 90... I think it would be a bit overpowered. I think the comparable analogy with the muscle car would be to race the Ford 289 against a "385" fictitious Chrysler. The bigger engine would always win.

To get comparable power, you have to go to a bigger displacement when switching from 2 to 4 stroke.

Personally, I'd use a .60 2-stroke, and keep the tricycle landing gear, even at the expense of some performance. I grew up liking the looks of those old pattern ships.

The unmuffled pipe would still be quieter than most stock mufflers. <G>

I love Chevies, Fords, Mopars and American Motors 343 & 390 CID V-8 engines. With that said, the only Ford muscle cars ever made had large block 428 and Boss 429 CID engines in them. The 427 wasn't bad either. But really, Ford never made a small block that was truly powerful. Don't forget, I like Fords too.

That little Mopar four cylinder in the Turbocharged Daytona 500 was a screamer and it even managed to stay in one piece.

Back to model airplanes. Anyone can do as they please as far as engines go, but a Tipo with a four-stroke doesn't interest me at all. Even a long stroke, two-stroke wouldn't cut it. I've got to hear prop tip noise before I'm happy with a Tipo.
