Yes, this is a classic pattern design, by Bertolani if I am not mistaken.

I had a Mini Cosmo from them - a great flier with an ASP 32 on a pipe. The kit quality is not very good, though. The reward is in the flying.

I also have the Kosmo 3° kit in my shop. Most of the wood is plywood ( which means it will be heavy if I build with the wood provided) and it does not include full size plans. Only sketches. I have seen a Kosmo in our club ( older one, probably different kit) and it is a fantastic flier as well.

i am building a kosmo 3 at the moment...its a bit smaller than the others. the mantua kit remains the same since... 1975!! i couldn t forget to buy it... i disagree... it s pretty light, and the wood is ok... fast to assemble and the wing jig is furnished!!! this plane was three times winner of the italian championship.. tomorrow, ill send photos, you ll see by yourself...

Yes I have a NIB kit that I got off a friend. It's a 1974 italian champs winning design by Benito Bertolani. Never heard of him but the plane is very nice. It has some very nice prefabricated wooden parts and apart from the straight trailing edge it's not unlike the Blue Angel. Mine includes all hardware (for fixed trike gear) and even a hardwood/metal universal wing jig.

From What he said on the phone it is not just a re run of the old kit but has had some updates.

Looks like the preshaped canopy base has been changed so that the shape is incorporated in the canopy mould. Also my wing jig has metal rods .Apart from that they look the same.

The canopy base in my kit is exactly like the one on your pics. But then mine is a couple of years old, and it took a big lump of balsa to make that canopy base for our kits ... they saved a good buck there.

Usual has happened, the uk supplier did not get back to me and the actual Mantua models people in Italy ( I think) just keep sending me a link to their website which shows a picture of the Cosmo 4 but when you try to order one it shows a Cosmo 3 in the catalogue.
Has anyone else managed to get the new Cosmo 4? or have any firm details.

Yea, it really is too bad that DW is not around. I'd like to thank him for the inspiration with his UFO builds (60 and 20). After putting it on ice for some time, I finally finished the UFO 30 drawings and the kits should be at my doorstep by the end of the week - I'm psyched!

Back to the Kosmo, yes, that 30 size Kosmo certainly would have caught his eye as it did mine. In some respects it is along the lines of the 20 size MK designs except that being an Italian kit, it is probably rather unorthodox. I always found Italian kits to be somewhat strange with wood selection that makes them fit for a canon launch rather than RC flying... they use a lot of birch, mahogany and other such heavy wood but perhaps that was then and is no longer. Even German kits (e.g., Graupner) were rather awkward although of considerably higher quality.

I started poking around the Mantua Models site because of the OPS 60 that was recently on auction and the active thread on the subject. It appears that OPS 60's are presently available although it's now under the guise of a different company. I wonder what the interests are in OPS and whether Mr. Picco (the P in OPS) is still part of that enterprise in one way or another. I believe him to be the mastermind behind the Super 60. It seems evident that Picco is going strong with their car engine division just like Hatori is going strong with their 4 stroke and Heli pipe division. Aero 2 strokes are really becoming an extinct breed. In any event, the North American dealership for OPS is here in my Province (Quebec) so I may just inquire with them with a few questions - maybe even drive up to go and see these engines one day.

Hi David,
I'd be interested in what the price for a new OPS rear would be. The one on ebay went fro $375 - wow, but a new one (Mantua/OPS) sells for about 277pounds in Great Britain - $428 US; so, not an inexpensive engine. A new AXE Rossi rear exhaust 60 is more than $300 and I believe the OPS may come with some accessories. A very potent engine, but who knows how long they will be available.

I think this tread has something to do with classic planes but also with their history and the history of pattern competition and the people that did it.
I wonder that you never heard of Benito Bertolani, he was the reigning champion in Italy for more than a decade starting from 1970, he was constantly member of the Italian team since Doylestown USA 1971 , he still was in the 3rd place team in South Africa 1979, he was the only Italian entry in TOC Las vegas, and after his competitions retirement he continued to run his own company producing kits like Komet, the TOC Zlin 526, Yak PM etc.,distributed all over europe at the time...
Now he's retired and back to the first modeling love, free flight gliders (f1a) of wich he was italian champion also before pattern....he's also a front man in organising the next Free flight european championship ...sometimes I think, looking at this tread about italian modeling goods, that distances are different depending on the point of wiew : as Italian looking to States, they look near...not so from the opposite

So you caught on to the South Dakota thing. I haven't moved yet. The plan is April, taing a road trip to WV in May with a stop at the AMAin Indiana. Really looking forward to it. I had to make a new account since my passwords are on my old desktop in storage. Thought I'd put the SD address to see if anyone from the state would take notice.. no bites yet.

If you happen to tka e a look at the OPS engines, PLEASE take a camera for all your friends down here.

I think in Europe we are much more interested in the history of modeling and what is done to design and develop the pattern ships of the past.
The FAI does have a lot of documents to search for that.
