Default Parkflyer Vintage Pattern?

After flying a GWS Formosa, I learned parkflyer pattern planes are a lot of fun. Who would be interested in a brushless foam parkflyer version of planes such as the Dirty Birdy, Phoenix, Kwik Fli, Kaos, etc? I think these would scale down nicely.

Wow, overwhelmingly bad reaction. Oh gods of vintage pattern, I apologize profusely...

Actually, a foamy Taurus I could fly in the back yard would be really nice

Banshee?
Perigee?
Tiger Tail?
Mach One?
Troublemaker? (oh yeah)

(Peppermint Pattie if I dare say)

The list could be endless. Just don't make them 3-D style, keep it looking and flying vintage.

Who knows? Maybe could be a whole new class of classic pattern flying, with contests in the gym during the winter?

C'mon, this would likely work out quite well. Why is it heresy? Of course, I like taildraggers, too, so I am already on the same side as Tommygun...

BTW, Handglider made a foamy version of Mike Hester's Black Magic and it apparently flies very well. Look up the Black Magic VF3 build thread in the main Pattern forum.

Tommygun:

I don't think it is heresy at all. Think of the areas that would be open to Vintage electric parkflyer pattern.
I agree with WEDJ's list my vote is Tiger Tail or Mach 1. Who wouldn't dig a foamy Peppermint Pattie (the 15size PP is very close to the Formosa and it flew great).

Multi tasking on Tower and BP hobbies right now looking for a kit. Slice the foam up glue new blue or beadboard parts on and cover with So Lite. Perfect for us northerners in the dead of winter.

We can have parking lot contests.

Peace

Oh, I was just kidding! If I had a park flyer I wouldn't have a 45 min trip to fly everytime I wanted to fly. Might as well make it a Curare if you are going to have a park flyer.

GWS has some new retracts coming out just for their foamies. I have used their earlier version and they are OK but light duty. The new ones are even available with a nose gear.

Just thinking out loud.

Peace

Don't forget the flaps/dive brakes for the Curare, too.

I wouldn't be interested, although it is a novel idea. For me vintage pattern is about the whole package: tuning an engine, sounds, smells, friends, a little oil, pipes, maneuvers, and reviving something once very popular. Call me greedy, but I can't get all of that from a foamy.

On an interesting note, I did mention it's about reviving something once popular. With the rising interest in smaller electrics I think they could be a way to draw more interest to this wonderful facet of aeromodeling, if some (including me) can get past the 'heresy' factor.

Interesting thought, but not for me. I do, however, think there's more to this idea than meets the eye.

P.S. I would like to see a pipe slung under an 049! I'll have to put that on the 'things to try before I die' list.

There are plenty of people doing this. I've been wanting to try one on one of my Sure Sharks (A plane I designed based on classic pattern ship moments). If I remember correctly, Deadstick has flown one of my Sure Sharks.

Here's a video of one built by another modeler:

Well..How Dang Cute is that!!

There is some "Dude-a" around here who has a 25 size Aurora...Has to be one of the Kewlest things!! Got a pipe...Painted up real nice...I'm gonna see if I can find a picture of his airplane...I Love that thing...

So maybe not a true foamy for me...but I would like a little small Aurora or SkyMaster or something like that...I think it would be fun!!

A 25 size pattern ship sounds so cool and looks wonderful. I am building a Super Pacer right now and was thinking about a 25 size Super Kaos, both for brushless power. That is so I can take them to my local park and not have to drive 45 min. to get to the flying field.

Jim's baby Aurora is *really* nice and flies as nice as it looks. We flew it one day last fall. It took a bit of work to get the engine running smoothly (hadn't been started in a looooong time), but then it had great power. Unfortunately we didn't realize we had the rudder reversed.... His son, Jason, flew the first flight and had an interesting landing after the engine died, but it came out ok. On the 2nd flight I got to fly it and made it look pretty good in the air except that my slow roll looked really bad. I didn't know why it looked so bad until I tried a stall turn right afterward and kept feeding in rudder, then more, then more, and watched it go the other way.... At that point I realized what was wrong and handed it back to Jason to land. I figured that he's family, so if anything happened to it and Jim killed him, at least Jim would get the insurance payoff. Thankfully (and in no part to Jason's skills), it was brought back to earth safely.

Hopefully Jim will get it out again soon and give me some stick time. Jimbo?????? Ya out there?????

Tim
