what kinda glow plugs are you using?
I have a quickie 500 with a speed webra 40 with pipe and never had a prob blowing glow plugs, but I do not use the cheap ones, use ones for racing type engines otherwise yes a reg one would blow every few flights.

Raising the head via head shiums lowers the compression ratio slightly reducing the tendancy to blow glow plugs due to the higher temperature the additional nitro content will cause; this is especially true on a piped engines.
In my case, running my ST X-61 with tuned pipe, on 3 engine runs I blew 2 plugs; not having head shims available, I placed a second plug washer under the glow plug achieveing the same thing as raising the head. I now have several runs on my ST X-61 and no blown plug yet.
So it seems to work. The only difference I noticed, the RPM's on the ground reduced by 165 RPM's, not enough to make a difference.

Before you ADD WEIGHT to the tail (and make the plane heavier) you might try moving the radio equipment to the rear of the wing saddle/radio compartment. The battery pack is probably the heaviest thing in there and is easiest to move. I almost always build a battery compartment behind the wing trailing edge (with an access hatch on the bottom) and put the servos at the rear of the radio compartment. It's easy and even if you can't match the color of the covering exactly, it doesn't show.
I actually don't finalize the radio installation until late in the build after checking the balance with various equipment locations.Terry in LP

yeah, the radio gear is in the very back of radio carpartment and the battery and switch is behind that in the back part of the fuse. guess i should get two A123 cells for my rx pack and that wold be more weight then 4 cells of the ni cads (double A sized)
I do not understand peoples worrys in adding some tail weight to get the CG right, on small electrics yes, but on a big 40 or 60 size plane thats the big deal with adding a few ounces to the tail.
if I could figure out a easy way to convert it to a tail dragger I would then get rid of that heavy nose wheel and all would help I would guess.

I always figured that it is better to relocate existing components to get the balance point as close as possible to perfect, but, if after that has been done, it may be necessary to add a dab weight. I see no harm in that either. But I'm not a super contest man, if you know what I mean.

Night prowler;
You get that plane of yours all fine-tuned and ready, and I'll make you an offer I hope you can't turn down.
You may not know that "dangerous" Dan Dougherty, and his wife will be our guests, staying at our house. We have room enough for one more person to stay with us. That will save you having to pay for any motel rooms. Just get youself here and back, and we'll take care of the rest. We will be having a pre-contest dinner at the house Friday evening that you shouldn't miss.
Hope to see you here-just let me know, and register.
