Beautiful Mach 1!
I just noticed that the Rhom mains have been inverted. The coils appear to point in the wrong direction. I imagine this has something to do with the grass strip?
David.

Hi aeomaster32!
Very nice Mach 1 you have built. I agree what is said in the Youtube video, beautiful lines. In my opinion Mach 1 is one of the most beautiful pattern airplane to look at, it is so sleak. The inner wing cord was at the time Mach 1 was released amazing to look at. I used my Mach 1 from grass strips all the time and I had Goldberg rectractable landing gear that could take rather hard landings without problem. In my white/orange Mach 1, some posts up in this thread, I had first a Rossi 60 side exhaust, later I had a Rossi 61 with rear exhaust so pipe was going through inside of the canopy then. With that engine my Mach 1 was very fast and I also had needle adjustment control from my radio with one extra servo. With the pipe tuned in and needle adjusted in flight it had no limits like it could climb vertically for ever. The last modification I made to my Mach 1 before it was history was to sweep down the stabilizer in negative V-shape like Curare pattern ship had. Found another picture of my Mach 1 coming in for landing, see below.

I can see you have gone to some trouble with the power delivery. It is unusual for models of this era to have vertical performance, some of them weighing 10 pounds. My landing gear is near 40 years old, and I no longer trust the seals to hold air. The replacement pneumatic tube was a poor fit on the nipples, so I had to limit pressure to 50 psi. To make the airplane as usable as my Aeromaster (or yours) will require a new gear, and some lightening, because I had to add nose weight to balance. A heavier more powerful engine would be the answer if it would fit in the tight space. In the mean time, I just enjoy looking at it.

Speaking of vertical performance, this old airplane of mine is a little off topic, but for a 1940 model it would be hard to catch.

I just finished getting the Mach 1 short kit up on the EAC site, along with a few prototype build pics showing the change to a standard motor mount.

dfturnock,
Nice "short kit" and foam wing, foam stab you have made!
1. I tried the link "build sequence" ( http://www.eurekaaircraft.com/plan_k..._one_build.htm ) but it gave me a ERROR 404 - PAGE NOT FOUND. Would be interesting to see the what you have to show in that link. Could you check why the link do not work?
2. Another question, have you made the kit based on orginal Mach 1 drawing (like it was in Model Airplane News for example)? I suppose plan from June 1973 issue of Model Airplane News. I have notiecd plan is still available at www.rcstore.com (plan nr FSP06733).
Tried to find back issue of June 1973 Model Airplane News on their homepage but could not find anything that old. Maybe it is possble to order from MAN a reprint if the article of Mach 1.
3. How is it intended that nose/engine section is built - is it suppose to be carved out of balsa or is fiberglas cowl to prefer? In Your "Modified tank area plan" on your homepage the nose section has no details.
4. Any plans for selling a plastic canopy for Mach 1?

Thanks..
One too many \plan_kits in the link.
I think most of your questions are answered in the latest verbage on the build page. It is based on the plans are available from MAN.. Hopefully they include an article reprint with the plans.. I know they used to.
GlockGuy is supposed to be making canopies, but I don't know the quality. If anyone has an old canopy, send it to Keith at Park Flyer Plastics [link]http://home.att.net/~parkflyerplastics[/link] to get one made up. His quality is second to none, and very reasonably priced. Let everybody know once he has a plug made. I have been using Keith for all of my plastic work. He made one for the Banshee, so size isn't a problem. I'm not sure what material he uses for the plug, but his canopies come out fantastic.
Since it will be flown with a wide range on engines, the method I describe at the bottom of the page is he best way to get the nose ring in the proper location. Mount the nose ring on an installed engine, with a spacer to get a gap between it and the spinner, and fill in the sides, top and bottom with 1/2" or so balsa, and sand away what doesn't belong. I think the majority of planes where done that way back in the day.
Later....

Guys,
I have four canopy plugs ready to go and made a run of ten Mach 1 canopies yesterday. I also have a Compensator canopy ready as pictured in the foreground. I still have to figure the cost. In my opinion the canopies turned out very well.

Leo, they look good! Cool!
Once you have a price, I'll put a link on the EAC site on the Mach 1 and Compensator pages for guys to get them from you, plus any others you have.

Hi guys. Great to see this thread still going. I included my Mach one some time ago, page one of the thread I think. I also see a few guys mentioning the Mach 8 which was basically the 80% version of the Mach one. For those that are interested I have just started my Mach 8 build. I don't intend doing a build thread as there is nothing special about the way this model is built but here are some pics anyway.
Lets keep the old classics flying!

I'd like a Compensator canopy! Please PM me for details. Thanks!

Free Bird,
Will send you a PM regarding the Compensator Canopy. I plan to use this same Canopy on The Sequel that Laser Technologies will be doing next. I have started a Mach 1 Laser Kit build thread using Laser Technologies Mach 1 "Beta" Short Kit that I just got. This is a really beautiful laser cut kit.

I was just reading your post and looking at the pics in the other thread. It's nice to see this great looking bird being noticed again. I've got a NIB Midwest kit waiting in the wings to be built. I'll be following your thread with great interest Leo. Also looking forward to that Compensator canopy as I've got an unfinished airframe that I picked up at a swap meet early last month.

The PDF of the parts is on the web page... We also found that Wing Mfg has the original Canopy designed for the plans. We now have the foam wings and canopy, prepared by the late Ralph Andre (original owner of Wing Mfg, where our wings originally came from), from when the plans came out. Very cool. We will have the canopy in stock for sale with kits and wing sets. Contact Wing Mfg for single canopies. Wing also has a 'cockpit kit' for the Mach One, which we may be stocking also. I have one coming to look at.
