Special Classic Pattern Event in Muncie, September 2009?
How would you like to attend the induction ceremony of the original Ed Kazmirski's "Original" Taurus?
How would you like to fly at the countries finest flying facility with dozens of your pals and their "Classic" pattern models?
How would you like to have an organized evening dinner with a panel of modeling icons from the "classic" pattern era?
I just learned today (Cees, Taurus thread), that the special Ed Kazmirski Taurus will be inducted into the AMA Museum in September of 2009. For all I know, there already is an event planned through the Antique Pattern Association...?
The logistics are reasonable simple, the location is well known, your kids are at college (if you drove them), you can miss a football game AND it will be great fun!
Personally, it helps motivate me to finish the half dozen projects I have in my work shop. I am always willing to let ANYONE (buddy box for the most timid) fly my toys. Maybe our good friend Cees would attend?
Let me know the interest, what may already be planned and I will make an event out of it.

I'd be very interested in attending also. The sooner dates are known the better as I need to schedule vacation time well in advance.

Mr. McConville...Mike...I am glad you are interested...you were the FIRST person I was going to call to be on the discussion panel!
Turns out there is an entire special interest group dedicated to vintage radio control...
http://www.vintagercsociety.org/index.html
Hey Rusty...pay more attention to your Model Aviation magazine...to the work and interests of your pal Bob Noll...the Vintage R/C Society. They are having a very nifty event in September, which after speaking to event organizer Jack Hiner (can you imagine, he lives 15 minutes from me in the Chicago area!) at first blush, believes that "My Agenda" (selfishly, I am very interested in promoting things of personal interest, full disclosure) can work well within the already scheduled activities planned.
I think of it as "Come to Rusty's tailgate party before the big game in the parking lot of the stadium." In this case the big game is the scheduled event at AMA headquarters and my tailgate party based at my RV at AMA flying site #3.
Please provide feedback and thoughts to help me, help you, make the trip to Muncie in September 22 through 26, 2009!

Freebird- The dates are firm...the Vintage R/C event is on the calendar.
"Rusty's Classic Pattern Tailgate Party" is firm for Friday 9/25 (morning) through Saturday 9/26. The tailgate party at a minimum will include ice chests full of sodas, the most experienced aerobatic "minds" available for building, finishing and trimming advice as well as models available for flying. If it would not conflict with the already scheduled Vintage R/C event, an evening get together featuring a panel of special guests. Having executed a number of these type of events over the years, the best interaction is not scripted with an informal atmosphere. I just want to meet other modelers who are "classicly minded", fly as much as possible and celebrate my son Chip's 7th birthday. (Photo is of Chip learning to fly his old school Falcon 56, same kind of model Dad soloed 30+ years prior to the photo, summer 2007).
Definition of my vision:

The Vintage Event will have (3) classes of aerobatic competition including pre 1955, 1955 - 1905, 1965 - 1974, a scale event with 1960's rules, models & equipment on display, Kazmirski Taurus museum induction and OPEN FLYING.

The IRKS Club of Cocoa is holding a 3 day event to include Vintage airplanes and SPA airplanes; thus combining VRCS and SPA. The event happens to coincide and is being held on September 25, 26, 27, 2009.
CD's will be Ron Ellis and Dave Platt. The Vintage airplanes will fly on Friday and Saturday, with SPA flying on Saturday and Sunday.
Friday will will also offer practice time for those SPA pilots who decide to come early.
You may contact me for any information or Ron Ellis.

Rusty,
There is an annual event at Muncie associated with VR/CS. This years fly-in reunion will be particularly special because of the VR/CS, (62 NATS and 3rd place 63 Worlds competitor) Taurus's, induction into the AMA Museum. To provide some background, the purchase of the NATS Taurus was a "grass-roots" effort among indiviaual VR/CS members. Many of us got together and pooled our resources to be able to acquire Ed's Taurus to prevent it from leaving the country forever and being shipped to Japan. It was a great example of folks with a common cause working together to make something happen for the benefit of American modelers...now anybody can see Ed's most famous plane when they are in the area.
Currently the VR/CS Taurus is making the rounds at VR/CS events so it can be seen "up close and personal" by as many modelers as possible before being given to the museum. Personally, this will be the first time I've made the trip to the VR/CS Muncie event. I would very much like to reunite Ed's two personal Taurus(s), and get pictures of them together, (along with as many of the contributors as possible that made it happen).
If you decide to make your "Tailgate Party" a reality, I'd recommend you try to coordinate whatever plans you have with Bob Noll, VR/CS president.
Hope to see you there

Special Classic Pattern Event in Muncie, September 2009!!!
Duane (Mr. Wilson...more respectful)
"Rusty's Classic Pattern Tailgate Party" is ON!**
Thank you for the background and history of the VR/CS, the Kazmirski Taurus and the story, behind the story about the efforts to keep the model in the country. I imagine that we have many mutual modeling friends in your part of the country to give you the inside scoop on how I absolutely love to put together fun events...
Basically, I am just encouraging anyone who has an interest in the 1965 - 1974 pattern models to make an effort to come to Muncie. The facility is one of my favorite places to fly/practice in the country. Additionally, Mike Smith and crew have done a very fine job with the AMA museum. The models on display are very special...the models in the back...due to the lack of museum viewing space are equally amazing. The AMA library has virtually every modeling magazine issue from the beginning of time...in one room!
Photos of typical set-up and typical example of "high profile guest".
Cees, please consider coming from your far away corner of the world, and be my guest for dinner at the famous Texas Road House in Muncie.
** Only a family emergency, act of God...will cancel my attendance at the event.

Special Classic Pattern Event in Muncie, September 2009!
I am pleased to announce that Dave Guerin, professional builder to the stars, designer , Pattern Nats contest director, F3A Team manager, F3A selection committee chairman and just all around great "old school" guy, will be my side-kick for the "Rusty's Classic Tailgate party".
Dave and I have hosted a half dozen of these kind of events (I have learned a ton) so I am very biased in my opinion...He is particularly helpful at resolving trimming both of his many designs as well as applying a teachable discipline to any model.
The photo is of Dave (left) wearing a 2007 USA F3A Team apparel item called "Anti-Bullschido Suit", Rusty and Rusty's Oxai Zeque. The "Anti-Bullschido Suit" is designed to protect the wearer from bullschido...
The other photo is of multi-time world champion Hanno Prettner...although he is invited, will probably not be in attendance. The photo is included as an advertising and promotional gimmick although may reflect a significant moral hazard. The photo is intended to be humorous recognizing that you, like my wife, rarely find me humorous.
Help me inspire as many classic pattern minded modelers make the trek to Muncie for the VR/CS event and my little informal tailgate party.

"Rusty's Classic Pattern Tailgate Party"
I just wanted everyone interested to confirm that this activity held in conjunction with the VRCS nationals is still on my calendar!
"Rusty's Classic Pattern Tailgate Party" is functionally a hospitality tent (my RV) within the AMA flying site to provide interested parties a place to meet, get a beverage (free) say hello and talk about the golden age of R/C precision aerobatics...1970 - 1985 (my opinion). It is my assumption that with the advent of 2.4 frequencies, the AMA flying site will have a place to fly independent of the VRCS event?
I plan to arrive sometime late morning on Friday 9/25 and stay through late morning on 9/27. I expect to have several classic models available for you to fly as well a few experienced flight trim and set-up experts to assist.
Plan to attend! Please let me know if you will be attending so I have enough "special treats" available.

Berusty,
The distance is too big you understand, I already did let you know.
I still do have an unanswered question for you and maybe you can get an answer for that when you are over there.

I hope you all have a nice meeting and nice weather in September, Muncie

Rusty's Classic Pattern Tailgate Party!
Cees- The plaque looks like it says "Vintage" across the top...I will check with the gentleman I received the photo. I called and sent an e-mail this afternoon.
Kingaltair- The Taurus induction ceremony time? I looked on the schedule posted on the VRCS site and it did not specify when but did indicate that it was available for viewing.
Open flying...is available the entire week of the event. I suspect that most of the events will be on the grass, site 4 at AMA. The best site for my tailgate party will be Site 3 which is between Site 4 and Site 1, next to the RV area. The following models will be available for flying either "straight-up solo" or via buddy box (Mode II only!):
World Models Intruder w/ O.S. .61 FX Macs muffled pipe
MK Champion Enya .60
Sig Komet Webra 10cc
Model Tech Calypso ST S.61 Macs pipe (per Hanno's WC model)
Bridi Dalotel 84" YS 1.70 DZ (Restored Great Planes original demo model)

Cees,
Regarding the photo of Ed...here is the reply I received yestereday:
"...Rusty,
The photo was taken at Ed's home on a lake in South Holland, Illinois in the year 2006.
Ed was inducted into the VR/CS Hall of Fame that year and I spent an afternoon at his house.
I presented him with the plaque for this honor but do not remember the exact words.
I have attached a couple photos to this email I took that day with Ed holding the award..."
Special estate sale I attended over the weekend
I picked up 2 Dirty Birdy 40's, 1 Bridi Tweety Birdie and a very special World Engines Calypso with sheeted wings/stab and a fuselage you build, a sorta ARC kit. Truly estraordinary $ for my pals.

I did ask, why is Ed Kazmirski not mentioned in the AMA Hall of Fame?
I understand you do not know the AMA has a Hall of Fame!

Cees,
#1. I answered the specific information about the photo that I posted.
#2. You often write things that give many RCU readers the impression you are a (insert word of reader's choice...)!
I am quite familiar with the AMA, the history and legacy of hundreds and hundreds of aero modelers archived by the AMA and the fact that a "Hall of Fame" exists.
Your "genius" may be best shared with your fellow Netherlanders rather than waste your pithy and cagey remarks on the ears and eyes of the sincere.

This thread would not be complete without this picture taken two years ago honoring Ed for his contributions to R/C pattern, and presented by the Vintage R/C Society, (VR/CS). Attached is this very special picture showing Ed holding the fuselage to the first Taurus auctioned...with the Top Flite pilot. Notice the PLAYBOY BUNNY. This is the fuselage VR/CS will be donating to the museum.
Photo I believe was taken by Jack Hiner from VR/CS. It was taken at Ed's home in 2006.

For that see your own post 915, page 37 of the Ed Kazmirski's Taurus thread.

Classic Pattern Tailgate Party...a couple of weeks away!
Just a reminder that the very informal, just for fun, "Classic Pattern TailGate Party" will begin in Muncie, IN at the AMA flying site beginning Friday September 25.
As promised, Dave Guerin and I will share my completed collection of stuff (I was not able to complete all the models...) but will have the Classic Pattern-Trader Intruder Demo, MK Champion and the Calypso set-up like Hanno had for his 1985 "Trainer Model" that kicked everyone's ars...
The Dose Family RV will be base camp with soda's, water, snacks and more at Site 4 as Site 3 is the location of the Vintage R/C events on Site 3.
Ed Kazmirski's Taurus will be inducted into the AMA Museum on Saturday.
If you are coming let me know so I can be on the look out. I do not know if anyone or 10 or more will attend.

Rusty,
Just a "bump" and a quick question to see if you will still be there on Friday the 25th. I would like to head up in the afternoon to see you and your planes. Let us know if everything is still a go. Thanks.
