Default SEQUEL, Laser cut kit

Hello Everyone,

This is the BETA short kit for Carl (Bud) Weber's plane: SEQUEL cut by Dan @ Laser Technologies ([email protected]). Dan decided to draw a new set of plans to include one wing panel at full size with the critical measurements listed on it and have a clean plan to work with. The only source of plans I could find was the AMA which took the 8 1/2" x 11" plan from the magazine article and printed it at full size. That copy was not acceptable for this project.

Most of the contents of the short kit are pictured. The short kit will include a Flying Fork System and a Compensator Canopy which we think was used in the original construction article. Not pictured are the foam wing panels, and the built up vertical fin and rudder. If you wish, you can cut the vertical fin and rudder from 3/4" sheet as in the original article/design. Dan is waiting for the foam and is working on the drawing for the vertical fin and rudder. Pictures of those items will be added to this thread shortly.

I now own the original Flying Fork Mold that was made for Bob Violett by Molder Maker, Alvin Sagar in the 1973/1974 time frame. It was fun to track down since the only information I had was a shipping receipt from 6/15/1980! You will see the mold in the pictures. I plan to preserve the mold and will leave it to someone else in the future when my time is up.

I have wanted to build this one for sometime now and will be starting on it shortly. The first thing to be built is the Flying Stab. Please contact Dan @ Laser Technologies if you are interested in the SEQUEL short kit. Dan has many more of the Classic Pattern Planes planned for the future.

Very nice Leo!

look forward to this one. I just sent Dan an email. Are you going to start this one while also finishing the M1?

Glock Guy,

This is awesome! I am interested in seeing this one come to life, and I will be following your tread. I think this airplane will be an outstanding performer.

KLXMASTER14/Robert,

I have wanted to build this one for a long time and think it will do well in the air. I will have two build threads going at once (Mach 1). Hopefully I can make it all work.

ron9844/Ron,

This one will have a foam wing as the original. The original plans showed the wing at 1/4 scale and it was difficult to see where things went. Dan took care of that when he drew the new plans. He has one wing panel at full size with the retract measurements, LE & TE material and Ailerons clearly defined. Dan should have the foam wings cut today or tomorrow.

Hello Guys,

I cut the stab part mof the plan out and laid it out on the building board. You can see the ribs, flying fork, LE & TE and spars laid out on the plans. Tomorrow the Stab assembly will begin. Dan at Laser Technologies will be providing a copy of the original construction article with his sort kits. The Stab is the most complicated part of the build and the Stab must be completed prior to assembly of the Fuse. More to follow.

Hi Everyone,

I started construction of the Stab today. You can see Ribs 1 & 2 in place with some of the Flying Fork System. Epoxy was added to the Lexan Bearings and to the short Aluminum tube that the fork rides on. After that more ribs were added. More Epoxy was added at the correct locations. After the Epoxy sets up it will be time for the two top Basswood spars and the Leading Edges. After that the bottom spars will be added along with a few fillers, sheeting and Stab tip blocks. More later today.

Dan's Laser Cutting is perfect. The Flying Fork Parts slid into position without issues.

Hello,

The Majority of the Stab has been completed. The top and bottom spars have been added, the leading edges have been glued on. The end ribs have been sanded flat to accept the stab tips when it's time. The LE & TE need to be sanded to rib shape. The rib ends and rib end trailing edge need to be added behind the TE that you see now prior to sheeting. More on that in the next post or two. I can't wait to get it sheeted and cut the center section loose so the Flying Stab moves! Dan at Laser Technologies has done a fantastic job on this.

Bob Violett designed the "flying fork" for his "shrike" pattern plane which used a full pivoting stab. There were three shafts through the stabilizer: the forward shaft as a pivot point, and rear shaft moved in the slot in the fork.

Hi Guys,

I spoke to Dan @ Laser Techologies today. He has had a couple people ask about a built up wing for the SEQUEL. He said that if there is enough interest he may do it. As most of you may already know he did a built up wing for the MACH 1 which worked out really well. So, the question is: How many of you would want a built up wing version? Post here or email Dan. I should be able to get back to work on the SEQUEL in the next day or so.

Hi Guys,

I taped off the ribs by the LE & TE so I could shape the LE & TE. I cut the fork off so that it will not come through the sheeting as far when it moves. This was done in the original. After that I added the sub ribs and final TE parts. The spars were cut prior to sheeting so after the assembly is sheeted the LE & TE can be cut to make Flying stab work. The next steps will be: Sheeting, stab tip blocks and final shaping. More to follow.

Guys,

I was able to get 1/2 of the stab sheeted. I like to make paper templates for the sheeting. It's easier for me that way. I also like to use a fine tip Pipette filled with thin CA to get things glued down without wasting the glue in tight areas. Here are some pictures of the progress.

Hi Guys,

I finished sheeting the Stab today. The first picture shows some of the sheeting ready to go and follows from there. Next session will be the Stab tips, shaping the LE and tips. Then the final step, cutting the center section free. If all goes well I will have a flying stab at that point and can begin construction of the Fuselage.

Hello Everyone,

The Stab Tips were made and glued in place. After the glue had set the Stab Tips were shaped. I gave the stab a quick sanding. You can see the diamond profile at the tip. At this point I need to put a 3/16" radius on the LE. Radius the Stab tips and cut the center section of the Stab free. You can see the fuselage jig I will be using in the background. Here is a link to the jig if you want to make one:

http://webpages.charter.net/rcfu/Con.../FJConstr.html

The fuselage jig is just like the one published in RCM Magazine way back when. It was simple to make and works well.

Hey Guys!

Not trying to hijack this wonderful build thread, just passing on some information. I recently got a Sweetater canopy from Leo (GlockGuy) and it's pretty sweet! Leo is a great guy to deal with! I appreciate his efforts!

Let the build continue!

Hello Everyone,

I was able to work on the SEQUEL Stab today. The LE was shaped and the center section was cut free with a 1/16" gap on each side. You can see the 1/16" scrap in the pictures to get the gap right . It works very well. The last two pictures show the Stab deflected to up and down position. The Stab tips need to be shaped and this part of the project is complete.

Robert,

Thank you for the compliment. The fuse should move along quickly when I have some spare time. I really liked building the flying stab. It operates smoothly.

I have been following this and may have missed it but where do you get the flying stab assembly ? is it part of the short kit ? seems it is a crucial part and if unavaiable what to you use instead?

Hello,

I have many sets of the Flying Fork unitsavailable and own the original mold. The Flying Fork units are included in the short kit from Dan @ Laser Technologies. I plan to work on the build over the weekend if time permits. Thank you for following along.
